1991 Umaglesi Liga ...
The 1991 Umaglesi Liga was the second season of top-tier football in Georgia. It began on 16 March and ended on 28 June 1991. In that season, Georgia was declared the independence from Soviet Union in April 1991, so the championship became national. The season was a transitional because from following season the schedule was changed to the autumn-spring schedule. Iberia Tbilisi were the defending champions. The Erovnuli Liga ( ka, ეროვნული ლიგა - lit. National League) is the top division of professional football in Georgia. Since 1990, it has been organized by the Professional Football League of Georgia and Georgian Football Federation. From 1927 to 1989, the competition was held as a regional tournament within the Soviet Union. From 2017 the Erovnuli Liga switched to a spring-autumn system, with only 10 clubs in the top flight. Mikheil Kavelashvili
Mikheil Kavelashvili ( ka, მიხეილ ყაველაშვილი; born 22 July 1971) is a Georgian politician and former professional footballer. He is the co-founder of People's Power party. As a player he was a striker who notably played in the Premier League for Manchester City and in the Swiss Super League for Grasshoppers, Zürich, Luzern, Sion, Aarau and Basel. He also played for Dinamo Tbilisi and Spartak Vladikavkaz. He was capped 46 times by Georgia, scoring nine goals. He moved into Politics in 2016 was elected to the Parliament of Georgia in the Georgian Dream party before leaving to co-found the People's Power party. FC Mretebi Tbilisi
FC Mretebi Tbilisi was a Georgian football club based in Tbilisi. Mretebi were founded on 3 February 1988 by Vazha Chkaidze, a football coach and theatre director. p30. At that time, major football clubs in the Soviet Union were professional in practice, but were officially regarded as amateur. For example, Lokomotiv players were officially classed as railway workers. Mretebi were founded as an openly professional club, the first Soviet club to do so. Amid the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgian football established an independent football league system in 1990. Mretebi reached the last sixteen of the Georgian Cup in 1990, and won the Second Division in 1991. Winning the Second Division meant a playoff for promotion to the Umaglesi Liga, the highest level of Georgian football. In sports leagues, promotion and relegation is a process where teams are transferred between multiple divisions based on their performance for the completed season. FC Kolkheti-1913 is a Georgian football club based in Poti. Following the 2022 season, the club earned promotion to Liga 2, the second division of Erovnuli Liga. FC Tskhumi Sukhumi
FC Tskhumi Sokhumi is a Georgian association football club, currently playing in Regionuli Liga East, the fifth tier of the Georgian league system. The club was based in Sokhumi in 1990–1993 and following the War in Abkhazia (1992–1993) was re-founded by an internally displaced person from Abkhazia in Tbilisi. History In 1990, most Georgian clubs including FC Dinamo Tbilisi withdrew from the Soviet League system and established the Georgian national league as the Umaglesi Liga. The club's predecessor, FC Dinamo Sokhumi, refused to join it and continued to play in the Soviet First League for the next two seasons. FC Dinamo Batumi is a Georgian football club based in Batumi, Adjara, and current vice-champion of Erovnuli Liga, the top division of Georgian football system. The club has won the league (2021), the Georgian Cup ( 1997-98) and Super Cup (1997-98, 2022). They have also earned silver medals of the league five times. FC Mertskhali ( ka, მერცხალი ოზურგეთი; English: Swallows) is a Georgian association football club from Ozurgeti, currently playing in Regionuli Liga, the fifth tier of the national league system. The club has spent four seasons in Umaglesi Liga, the top Georgian division. History Early period Founded in 1936, the team finished 2nd in Division 2 in 1938 and advanced to the main league of the Soviet Georgian championship. In 1958 they claimed their first bronze medals. In the next two years Mertskhali twice clinched the Republican Cup.
