1991 Portuguese Presidential Election
The 1991 Portuguese presidential election was held on 13 January. The re-election of the hugely popular Mário Soares was never in doubt, specially after the then-ruling Social Democratic Party (Portugal), PSD, led by Prime Minister Aníbal Cavaco Silva announced its support. Therefore, the election held on 13 January 1991 was a landslide, and no second round was needed. As the election of a left-wing candidate was assured, other left-wing parties, the Portuguese Communist Party and the People's Democratic Union (Portugal), People's Democratic Union, presented their own candidates. The communists presented Carlos Carvalhas, who had been Assistant General Secretary of the Party a year before (Álvaro Cunhal was the secretary-general). Percentage Point
A percentage point or percent point is the unit for the arithmetic difference between two percentages. For example, moving up from 40 percent to 44 percent is an increase of 4 percentage points, but a 10-percent increase in the quantity being measured. The Socialist Party ( pt, Partido Socialista, , PS) is a social-democratic political party in Portugal. Mário Alberto Nobre Lopes Soares, (; 7 December 1924 – 7 January 2017) was a Portuguese politician, who served as prime minister of Portugal from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1985, and subsequently as the 17th president of Portugal from 1986 to 1996. He was the first secretary-general of the Socialist Party, from its foundation in 1973 to 1986. A major political figure in Portugal, he is considered the father of Portuguese democracy. Joaquim da Silva Furtado (Penamacor, 1948) is a Portuguese journalist, reporter, television anchor and documentary film director. He worked during almost all his entire career for state-run RTP television network, including in RTP 2 for many years. He became a well-known media personality during the Carnation Revolution military coup on April 25, 1974. RTP2 (''RTP dois'') is a Portuguese free-to-air television channel owned and operated by state-owned public broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). Mário Crespo (born April 13, 1947) is a Portuguese retired journalist and reporter. Early life He was born in Coimbra, his father was an employee of the Portuguese bank Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU), and his mother, a professor at the Commercial School. As civil servants of the Portuguese Empire, they moved to Portuguese Mozambique capital, Lourenço Marques, with their only baby son.
