1991 Florida State Seminoles Football Team
The 1991 Florida State Seminoles football team represented Florida State University in the 1991 NCAA Division I-A football season. The team was coached by Bobby Bowden and played their home games at Doak Campbell Stadium. This was Florida State's final season as an independent; it joined the Atlantic Coast Conference the following season. Florida State finished the season ranked #4 in both polls. They started the season ranked at the top of the polls, but were dropped in the rankings after Wide Right I. The Seminoles offense scored 449 points while the defense allowed 188 points. After the completion of the regular season, they competed in the Cotton Bowl Classic. Quarterback Casey Weldon was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. Bobby Bowden
Robert Cleckler Bowden (; November 8, 1929 – August 8, 2021) was an American college football coach. Bowden coached the Florida State Seminoles of Florida State University (FSU) from 1976 to 2009 and is considered one of the greatest college football coaches of all time for his accomplishments with the Seminoles. During his time at Florida State, Bowden led FSU to an Associated Press and Coaches Poll National Title in 1993 and a BCS National Championship in 1999, as well as twelve Atlantic Coast Conference championships once FSU joined the conference in 1991. Bowden's Seminoles finished as an AP top-5 team for 14 consecutive seasons, setting a record which doubled the closest program. However, the program weakened during the mid-2000s, and after a difficult 2009 season Bowden was fired by President T.K. Wetherell, just weeks after his 80th birthday. The Citrus Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The bowl is operated by Florida Citrus Sports, a non-profit group that also organizes the Cheez-It Bowl and Florida Classic. The 1991 Syracuse Orangemen football team represented Syracuse University in the 1991 Division I-A college football season. The Orangemen finished the season 10–2, winning the 1992 Hall of Fame Bowl. Two new eras began for Syracuse football. It was the first season as head coach for Paul Pasqualoni, who was promoted from assistant after Dick MacPherson, who had led the Orangemen for the previous 11 seasons, left to take the head coaching job at the New England Patriots. More important in the long term, this was the first season in which the Big East Conference sponsored football—although the conference would not establish a full round-robin schedule in the sport until the 1993 season.
