1990 Pacific Cup
The 1990 Pacific Cup was the fifth edition of the Pacific Cup, a rugby league tournament held between Pacific teams. The tournament was hosted by Tonga and eventually won by Western Samoa, who defeated New Zealand Māori 26–18 in the final, a replay of the 1988 final. Squads *The Australian Aborigines squad included Ricky Walford, Graham Lyons and Ron Gibbs. *The New Zealand Māori squad included Dean Clark, Sean Hoppe, Jason Mackie and captain Kelly Shelford. *The Friendly Islands side was made up mainly of local Tongan players. *Western Samoa included Se'e Solomona, Tony Tatupu. The 1988 Pacific Cup was the fourth edition of the Pacific Cup, a rugby league tournament held between Pacific teams. The tournament was hosted by Western Samoa and eventually won by the New Zealand Māori side, who defeated Western Samoa 26-16 in the final. Se'e Solomona
Maseese (Se'e) David Solomona (born 9 March 1965) is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who represented both New Zealand and Western Samoa. Background Solomona was born in New Zealand. Playing career Solomona started his career with the Richmond Bulldogs, and the Glenora Bears, playing 21 games for Auckland between 1988 and 1993. Solomona spent 1989 with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as part of the New Zealand Rugby League's "Rookie Scheme". Solomona played the majority of his career in England. He played for Oldham from 1992 to 1994. before returning home to play for the Auckland Warriors in their début season in the Australian Rugby League competition. He spent 1996 with the North Queensland Cowboys, and still resides in Australia. Representative career Solomona represented the Kiwi Colts in 1991. Rugby league is a popular team sport played in Tonga. History The Tongan national team was formed to enter the 1986 Pacific Cup. A domestic competition consisting of six clubs was launched in 1988. During the Super League war, Tonga joined the News Corp-backed Super League in June 1995. Competitions The Tongan Rugby League competition comprises 12 teams in the first division, and 7 in the second. Following the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, the competition was renamed the Jason Taumalolo Cup. The Indigenous Australian rugby league team (also known as the Indigenous All Stars or Indigenous Dreamtime team) is a rugby league football team that represents Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders. The team was first formed in 1973 and currently plays in an annual All Stars Match against a National Rugby League NRL All Stars team. Antonio (Tony) Emil Tuimavave is a Samoan former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s, who was the head coach of the Ponsonby Ponies from 2010, primarily as a also as a . He was nicknamed The Chief because he is a chief back in his native Samoa. Playing career Until the formation of the Auckland Warriors, Tony remained largely unheard off outside of the Auckland Scene. Kuripitone "Tony" Tatupu is a former professional rugby league footballer. He played as a and in the and represented both New Zealand and Western Samoa. Tatupu is the uncle of the rugby league footballer; Matthew Wright. Playing career Tatupu first played for the Mt Albert Lions in the Auckland competition before joining the North Harbour Sea Eagles for the 1994 Lion Red Cup season. Between 1991 and 1993 he played 12 games for Auckland. From there he joined the Auckland Warriors for their inaugural season in the Australian Rugby League competition. Along with Nigel Vagana he joined the Warrington Wolves in the Super League competition in 1997 before returning to the Warriors for another two seasons. In 2000 he returned to England to finish his career at the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.
