1988 Pacific Cup
The 1988 Pacific Cup was the fourth edition of the Pacific Cup, a rugby league tournament held between Pacific teams. The tournament was hosted by Western Samoa and eventually won by the New Zealand Māori side, who defeated Western Samoa 26-16 in the final. 1986 Pacific Cup
The 1986 Pacific Cup was the 3rd Pacific Cup, a rugby league tournament held between Pacific teams. The tournament was hosted in the Cook Islands and eventually won by the New Zealand Māori side, who defeated Western Samoa in the final. Background The 1986 Pacific Cup was the first to be held after the cancellation of the planned 1979 version. Only the New Zealand Māori side returned from the first two editions, as this Pacific Cup had a more Pacific Island focus than the first two which included Papua New Guinea (who now had Test status) and Australian lower grade sides. John Fifita
John Fifita ( to, Sione Fifita) (born 28 July 1959) is a Tongan former professional rugby league footballer who represented Tonga in the 1986 Pacific Cup and played as a professional in England and Australia. Playing career Fifita played for the St George Dragons between 1984 and 1990, starting in 76 first grade matches for the club.Alan Whiticker/Glen Hudson: Encyclopedia of Rugby League Players, 1995. Rugby league is a popular team sport in Samoa. History The Western Samoan national team was formed to enter the 1986 Pacific Cup. During the Super League war, Samoa joined the News Corp-backed Super League in June 1995. National teams The men's national team was formed in 1986 to enter the 1986 Pacific Cup. They have competed at six Rugby League World Cups (1995, 2000, 2008, 2013, 2017, 2021). Samoa were runners-up in the 2021 competition, losing 10–30 to Australia in the final. Western Samoa

Olsen Orekewa Filipaina (23 April 1957 – 10 February 2022) was a professional rugby league footballer who represented both New Zealand and Western Samoa. He played for the Balmain Tigers, Eastern Suburbs, and North Sydney Bears during his New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) premiership career from 1980 to 1987. Early life Filipaina was born in Kaikohe, New Zealand, on 23 April 1957. His mother was Māori and his father was from Samoa. Tawera Nuieia Nikau (born 1 January 1967) is a New Zealand former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. A New Zealand international representative forward, he played club football at a number of different clubs in New Zealand, England and Australia during his career, including the Melbourne Storm's victory in the 1999 NRL season Grand Final.
