1989 Copa América
The Copa América 1989 football tournament was hosted by Brazil, from 1 to 16 July. All ten CONMEBOL member nations participated. Brazil won their fourth Copa América, and first since 1949, by beating Uruguay 1–0 in the final match at the Estádio do Maracanã. This achievement ended a 19-year streak without official titles for the Brazilians. The last one had been in the 1970 World Cup. The final match between Brazil and Uruguay on Maracanã Stadium also marks exactly 39 years, on another 16 July since the FIFA World Cup 1950 Final. The top scorer was Brazilian Bebeto. Valdo Cândido Filho (born 12 January 1964), simply known as Valdo, is a Brazilian former footballer who played as a central midfielder, and a current manager of Congo national football team. In a senior career which spanned more than two decades, he played professionally – other than in his own country – in Portugal, France and Japan. Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense (), commonly known as Grêmio, is a Brazilian professional football club based in Porto Alegre, capital city of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Cristóvão Borges dos Santos (born 9 June 1959) is a Brazilian professional football coach and former player who played as a midfielder. He is the current head coach of Figueirense. Playing career Born in Salvador, Cristóvão played for Fluminense, Atlético Paranaense, Corinthians, Grêmio among other clubs, Cristóvão began his career in Bahia. Josimar Higino Pereira (born 19 September 1961), more commonly known as Josimar, is a Brazilian former footballer. Throughout his career, he played as a right-back, mainly with Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas and the Brazil national team. In his prime, he was named the best right-back in the world by FIFA. He is currently assistant coach at Botafogo. Career Josimar was born in Rio de Janeiro. Josimar won 16 caps with the Brazil national team, from June 1986 to November 1989. He played three times during the 1986 Football World Cup after an injury to first choice right back Édson.
