1988 Ottawa-Carleton Regional Municipality Elections
Elections were held on November 14, 1988 in the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton. This page lists the election results for local mayors and councils of the RMOC in 1988. Following the elections, Andrew S. Haydon, Andy Haydon was re-elected as the chair of Regional Council on December 14, by the elected members of the council. He was acclaimed to the position, as no councillor nominated an opponent, though public servant Douglas Campbell had declared an interest in the job. Gisèle Lalonde
Gisèle Lalonde, (; June 28, 1933 – July 26 or 27, 2022) was a Canadian politician and community activist, who served as the mayor of Vanier, Ontario from 1985 to 1991. Biography She was born in Eastview (later renamed Vanier in 1969). She received a teaching certificate from the University of Ottawa and taught in the Ottawa area from 1951 to 1973. During that time, she was also a member of the French Separate School Board for 13 years. She acted as an advisor on the subject of francophone education to Ministry of Education in Ontario and also chaired a council which advised Premier of Ontario on francophone matters. She ran for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario in the 1977 Ontario general election in the riding of Ottawa East, losing to Liberal Albert Roy. She married Gilles Lalonde. Glenn Brooks
Robert "Glenn" Brooks is a Canadian politician who was mayor of Rideau Township and later Ottawa City Councillor representing the rural Rideau-Goulbourn Ward. He grew up on a dairy farm outside of Oshawa and became a science teacher, he and his wife Gail operated a small beef cattle farm. He was first elected to the Rideau Township council in 1977. A teacher by profession he ran for mayor of the township in 1978 but lost to David Bartlett. Brooks remained a councillor and defeated Bartlett in a 1985 rematch. In 1991 Brooks was defeated by local businessman James Stewart, whom Brooks had defeated in his 1988 reelection. Brooks was nominated as the Reform Party candidate for the riding of Nepean—Carleton, but in March 1997 he resigned due to conflicts with the riding association before the election. Diane Holmes
Diane Holmes is a former Ottawa City Councillor representing Somerset Ward which consists of Centretown, Centretown West and the downtown core. She was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, and graduated from McGill University with a degree in Physical Education. She taught at McGill and the University of Toronto before moving to Ottawa. She was first elected to Ottawa city council in 1982 in a surprise victory over veteran alderman Joe Cassey. On city council, her priorities include housing, urban planning, community development, transportation, social services, women's issues and social justice causes. Nancy Smith (councillor)
Nancy Smith (born c. 1946) is a former Ottawa City Councillor. She represented St. George's Ward between 1980 and 1991. Prior to being elected, Smith served in both Federal and Provincial Public Services for ten years. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology from Dalhousie University, and a Master of Arts in Sociology from Carleton University. Whilst on the council, she was seen as being left wing. She ran for mayor in 1991, losing to Jacquelin Holzman by just over 3,000 votes. Jacquelin Holzman (born 1935) is a Canadian politician who served as the 55th mayor of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, from 1991 to 1997. Before that, she was an Ottawa city councillor from 1982 to 1991. Early life and advocacy Holzman was born in Ottawa, Ontario to parents Sally Feldman and Israel Feldman. She has one sister, Evelyn Greenberg. Holzman was an advocate for multiple causes before she became a politician. In the 1950s, Holzman joined the National Council of Jewish Women.
