The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations ( sw, Baraza la Mashirikisho ya Mpira wa Miguu Afrika Mashariki na Kati, french: Conseil des Associations de Football d'Afrique de l'Est et Centrale, ar, مؤتمر جمعيات شرق ووسط أفريقيا لكرة القدم; officially abbreviated as CECAFA) is an association of the football playing nations in mostly East Africa and a bit of Central Africa. An affiliate of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), CECAFA is the oldest sub-regional football organisation on the continent. History CECAFA was founded unofficially in 1927. The competition was sponsored by the major Nairobi-based soap-manufacturing firm Gossage, owned by the British Lever Brothers. Its formation is often misattributed to William Gossage, founder of the Gossage company. However, he died 50 years before the CECAFA was established. CECAFA Cup
The CECAFA Cup, is the oldest football tournament in Africa. It is organized by the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA). A FIFA competition, it includes participants of football playing national teams from the East African Region. Cup history There is an anomaly on national teams in the case of Tanzania. It fields two teams, Tanzania and Zanzibar. In 2005 and 2006, the tournament was sponsored by the Ethiopian-Saudi businessman Sheikh Mohammed Al Amoudi, and was dubbed the ''Al Amoudi Senior Challenge Cup''. It is the successor competition of the ''Gossage Cup'', held 37 times from 1926 until 1966, and the ''East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup'', held 7 times between 1965 and 1971. Malawi
Malawi (; or aláwi Tumbuka: ''Malaŵi''), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the west, Tanzania to the north and northeast, and Mozambique to the east, south and southwest. Lilongwe (, , ) is the capital and most populated city of the African country of Malawi. It has a population of 989,318 as of the 2018 Census, up from a population of 674,448 in 2008. In 2020 that figure was 1,122,000. The city is located in the central region of Malawi, in the district of the same name, near the borders with Mozambique and Zambia, and it is an important economic and transportation hub for central Malawi. Henry Motego
Henry Motego (born 21 May 1964) is a former Kenya international football forward who played for clubs in Kenya and Oman. Club career Born in Gucha District, Motego began playing football in the local league for Shabana Kisii. He helped the club gain promotion to the Kenyan Premier League in 1988. After performing well with Shabana, he was noticed by Kenya Breweries F.C. and signed for the club in 1989. In 1991, Motego signed for Omani league side Al-Oruba SC for two seasons. Motego returned to play for Kenya Breweries until he retired in 2000. Blantyre
Blantyre () is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce, and its second largest city, with an enumerated 800,264 inhabitants . It is sometimes referred to as the commercial and industrial capital of Malawi as opposed to the political capital, Lilongwe. It is the capital of the country's Southern Region as well as the Blantyre District. History Blantyre was founded in 1876 through the missionary work of the Church of Scotland. Derby Makinka
Derby Makinka (born 5 September 1965, in Harare, Southern Rhodesia, died 27 April 1993) was a Zambian footballer and member of the national team. He was among those killed in the crash of the team plane in Gabon in 1993. Career Makinka played club football for Profound Warriors in Zambia, where he was voted Zambian Footballer of the year in 1989, before moving to Pomir Dushanbe in the Soviet Top League near the end of 1989 after being spotted during their 4-0 win over Italy at the 1988 Olympics. With this move he became the first African, along with Pearson Mwanza and Wisdom Mumba Chansa, to play in the Soviet Union. Makinka's debut came on 2 October 1989 in an away match against Torpedo Moscow, before appearing twice more, against Rotor Volgograd and Metalist Kharkiv, before leaving at the conclusion of the 1989 season.
