1987–88 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Season
Huddersfield Town's 1987–88 campaign is statistically Town's worst ever season in their league history. Town won only 6 league games all season, had their heaviest ever defeat in their history, conceded 100 league goals in the season and finished 19 points adrift of safety and even 14 points behind 2nd-bottom team Reading. Both of the two managers during the season, Steve Smith and Malcolm Macdonald failed miserably and Macdonald is regarded as one of the worst managers in Town's history. Squad at the start of the season Review The start of the season was at the time, the worst in Town's history. The team lost most of their early games and Steve Smith, a hero during his playing days at Leeds Road, was shown the door on 6 October, after the 2–0 defeat at Birmingham City. Huddersfield Town A
Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. The town is in the foothills of the Pennines. The River Holme's confluence into the similar-sized Colne to the south of the town centre which then flows into the Calder in the north eastern outskirts of the town. The rivers around the town provided soft water required for textile treatment in large weaving sheds, this made it a prominent mill town with an economic boom in the early part of the Victorian era Industrial Revolution. The town centre has much neoclassical Victorian architecture, one example is which is a Grade I listed building – described by John Betjeman as "the most splendid station façade in England" – and won the Europa Nostra award for architecture. Brian Cox (footballer)
Brian Roy Cox (born 7 May 1961) is an English former professional footballer born in Sheffield, who played as a goalkeeper in the Football League for Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town, Mansfield Town and Hartlepool United. Cox started his career as an apprentice at Sheffield Wednesday, making his debut as a 17-year-old in a 1–1 draw against Oxford United in the Football League Third Division. After making 26 appearances in all competitions, he left for Huddersfield Town. Cox helped Mick Buxton's side gain promotion to the Football League Second Division, though by the time he left after 213 league games they had returned to the Third, but he may be best remembered for a game against Manchester City in 1987 when three players, Paul Stewart, David White and Tony Adcock, all scored hat-tricks as Huddersfield lost 10–1. David Cowling
David Roy Cowling (born 27 November 1958) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League as a left winger for Huddersfield Town, where he played 340 league games during the 1970s and 1980s. He also played for Scunthorpe United and Reading. Playing career Born in Doncaster, Cowling started his career at Mansfield Town, but never appeared for their first team before moving to Huddersfield Town in 1977. He is particularly remembered for two goals he scored during the 1982–83 season: the winner against Leeds United in the Football League Cup, and the only goal of the game against Newport County which secured Huddersfield's promotion to the Second Division. Junior Bent
Junior Antony Bent (born 1 March 1970) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger in the Football League for Huddersfield Town, Burnley, Bristol City, Stoke City, Shrewsbury Town and Blackpool. Bent began his career with his hometown club Huddersfield Town playing in 44 matches and spending time on loan at Burnley before joining Bristol City in 1990. He became a regular at Ashton Gate and went on to stay for seven years making 221 appearances including short loan spells with Stoke City and Shrewsbury Town. He left Bristol City in 1997 and joined Blackpool where he stayed for three seasons before entering non-league football with Kettering Town and Lancaster City. Mark Barham
Mark Francis Barham (born 12 July 1962) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-winger. Barham was a product of the Norwich City youth team, having signed him from his local club Folkestone and Shepway, and made his debut in the 1979–80 season against Manchester United. He played 213 times for Norwich and scored 25 times. While with the club he was capped twice by England on their 1983 trip to Australia. He was a member of the Norwich sides that won the League Cup in 1985 and the Second Division championship in 1986. Simon Paul Webster (born 20 January 1964) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender in the Football League for Tottenham Hotspur, Exeter City, Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United, Charlton Athletic, West Ham United, Oldham Athletic and Derby County. William John McStay (born 26 November 1961) is a Scottish former footballer and manager of clubs including Sligo Rovers, Újpest FC, Ross County and Celtic Nation. Playing career Born in Hamilton, McStay played for Celtic from 1979 to 1987. McStay made his debut on 2 April 1983 when he came on as a sub in Celtic's 3–1 home win over Motherwell and went on to make 65 league appearances, including 10 as a substitute, scoring two goals. McStay transferred to Huddersfield Town in March 1987 and later played for Notts County and Hartlepool United. David Burke (English Footballer)
David Ian Burke (born 6 August 1960 in Liverpool) is an English former professional footballer. He played as a left-back. Burke began his career at Bolton Wanderers in 1977, making his league debut as an 18-year-old on 2 September 1978, in a 2–2 draw at Birmingham. He remained at Burnden Park for four years, making 69 league appearances and scoring one goal. In 1981, he moved across the Pennines to join Huddersfield Town. He went on to make almost 200 appearances for the West Yorkshire club. He signed for Steve Coppell's Crystal Palace in 1987.
