1986–87 Luton Town F.C. Season
During the 1986–87 English football season, Luton Town F.C. competed in the Football League First Division and finished seventh, the best league position in the club's history to date. Season summary Manager David Pleat had left Luton at the end of the previous season to become manager of Tottenham Hotspur, and was replaced by former Luton defender John Moore. Under Moore, Luton enjoyed one of the best seasons in their history, finishing in seventh, their highest-ever placing in the top flight. However, Moore resigned at the end of the season, claiming he did not feel management was the right career for him. He was replaced by his assistant manager Ray Harford. Perhaps the only negative of the season was Luton being banned from competing in the League Cup due to the club's controversial scheme, introduced by chairman David Evans, to only admit club members and refusal to admit away fans. At the 2011 census, the Luton built-up area subdivision had a population of 211,228 and its built-up area, including the adjacent towns of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had a population of 258,018. Les Sealey
Leslie Jesse Sealey (29 September 1957 – 19 August 2001) was an English professional footballer and coach. He played as a goalkeeper, most notably in the top flight for Coventry City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and West Ham United. He also played in the Football League for Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle, Birmingham City, Blackpool, Leyton Orient and Bury. Following retirement, Sealey was appointed first team goalkeeping coach at West Ham United, a position he was in when he died of a heart attack on 19 August 2001. Career Sealey joined Coventry City as an apprentice in 1976 and made his debut as a 19-year-old on 11 April 1977, in a 1–1 draw at Queens Park Rangers. Robert Simon Johnson (born 22 February 1962 in Bedford, England) is an English former footballer, most noted as a player for Luton Town. Playing career Johnson signed for local club Luton Town as a 17-year-old in August 1979, but due to two serious knee injuries he didn't make his debut until late on in the 1982–83 season. The start of 1983–84 saw him loaned out to Lincoln City, where he made four appearances before returning to Kenilworth Road. Neither this year nor the next saw him play at all however, and he didn't become a first team player until 1985–86, when he made 15 appearances. He was now a first team regular, and he even appeared in the 1988 League Cup Final, helping Luton to a 3–2 victory over Arsenal. Marvin Anthony Johnson (born 29 October 1968) is an English former professional footballer who spent his entire career at Luton Town, playing as a defender. Playing career Johnson signed professional terms with Luton Town on 12 November 1986 as an 18-year-old centre back who could also play as either a full back or midfielder. Johnson made his league debut for Luton on 5 March 1988, in a 2–0 loss against Wimbledon.
