Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Hans-Jørgen Holman
Hans-Jörgen Holman (20 February 1925 – 6 August 1986) (also Hans-Jörgen Holmen-Guttormsen) was a Norwegian-American pianist/ harpsichordist and professor of music at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan. Holman specialized in Medieval and Renaissance music, and his 1961 Indiana University doctoral dissertation ''The Responsoria Prolixa of the Codex Worcester F 160'' is considered one of the principal authoritative works on the vocal music of the medieval church. One of the first musicologists to pioneer computer aided big-data studies, Holman built a database of 48.000 melodic phrases from European and Scandinavian sources in order to trace melodic migration and development. He was particularly interested in questions concerning the relationship between the religious vocal folk music of Norway and the liturgical music of the medieval church. Jakop Janssønn Hauan
Jakop Filip Janssønn Hauan (born 11 July 1986 in Tromsø, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician (drums and electronics). Career Hauan is a graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo (2011), holding a Bachelor's degree in executive drums and jazz improvisation. He has toured and played a series of concerts in Norway, Europe and Africa within bands like 'Halles Komet', 'Johan Lindvall Trio', 'Zarathustra', 'Northern Arc', 'IAmSound', 'Papirfly' ( Hanne Kalleberg Kvartett) and has participated in the competitions Jazzintro within the bands Cinnamon Re:source and 'Hanne Kalleberg Kvartett' and gained second place in ”nõmme jazz international youth competition, Jazz artist 2010”. Susanne Sundfør
Susanne Aartun Sundfør ( (local Haugesund dialect; ʉˈsɑ̀nːə ˈɔ̀ʈːʉːn ˈsʉ̀nføːrin Urban East ("standard") Norwegian); born 19 March 1986) is a Norwegian singer-songwriter and record producer. Born and raised in Haugesund, Sundfør embarked on her musical career two years prior to the release of her self-titled debut studio album (2007), which reached number three on the Norwegian album chart. It was followed by '' Take One'', a live album consisting of songs from her debut. Her second studio album, '' The Brothel'', was released in 2010 to commercial success in Norway, peaking at number one and becoming the best-selling album of that year. Maria Viktoria Mena (born 19 February 1986) is a Norwegian pop singer, best known for her singles such as " You're the Only One", "Just Hold Me", "All This Time" which charted in multiple countries. Early life Maria Mena was born into an artistic family. Her father is a drummer. There was a common misconception that her mother is a playwright, but Mena debunked this in an interview. Both Maria and her brother, Tony, are named after characters from Leonard Bernstein's ''West Side Story''. Her mother is Norwegian and her father is an American of Afro-Nicaraguan descent. Her father played in several bands in Oslo, which influenced Mena to write and record her own music. When Mena was nine years old, her parents divorced. Philip Schjetlein (born 12 January 1986) is a Norwegian jazz musician (guitar), known from self-titled bands like P. S. Quartet/Trio. Bias Bernhoft
Tobias Brodtkorb "Bias" Bernhoft (13 October 1902 – 24 November 1986) was a Norwegian singer and revue writer. Early and personal life He was born at Voss in 1902 to the Holmenkolbanen director Tobias Bernhoft (1869–1937) and his wife Marie Holmboe (1877–1974). He married Margit Haug (1908–98), a daughter of the hotel director Petter Haug (1875–1939) and Dorthea Olava Olsen (1878–1962). Bernhoft had two children with her, Unni Elisabeth Bernhoft (born on 4 March 1933) and Inger Marie Bernhoft (born on 29 January 1938). Unni Elisabeth Bernhoft married Bjørn Sand, and made her debut at Chat Noir in 1953. Career Bernhoft made his debut in the revue "Hvisk det Høyt" ( en, Whisper it Loud) at the theatre ''Casino'' in 1926 in Oslo. Two years later, he opened a tobacco shop at Majorstuen. is the largest Norwegian biographical encyclopedia. The first edition (NBL1) was issued between 1921 and 1983, including 19 volumes and 5,100 articles. Svein Øvergaard
Svein Arne Øvergaard (1 January 1912 in Kristiania (Oslo) – 23 November 1986 in Oslo) was a Norwegian resistance member, boxer and jazz musician (saxophone, percussion) and band leader, married to Gunhild Øvergaard (born Sandberg, 1912–1996), and known from the jazz scenes of Oslo. Biography Øvergaard played in Willie Vieth's Kaba Orchestra and as leader of the mighty popular Funny Boys (1932–39), he was among the first Norwegian jazz musicians to be known outside of Norway. From 1937 he led since his own orchestra, including with bassist Fred Lange-Nielsen, drummer Per Gregersen, guitarist Finn Westbye, saxophonist Arvid Gram Paulsen, and clarinetist Einar Gustavsen. He also collaborated frequently with drummer Pete Brown and guitarist Robert Normann. In 1938 he was Norwegian champion in boxing, junior light heavyweight, for the Boxing Club Pugilist.
