The 1986 Thomas Cup & Uber Cup was the 14th tournament of Thomas Cup and the 11th tournament of Uber Cup, the most important badminton team competitions in the world. Istora Gelora Bung Karno
Gelora Bung Karno Sports Palace ( id, Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno, abbreviated as ''Istora''), the formerly name ''Istora Senayan'' is an indoor sporting arena located in Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, Jakarta, Indonesia. The capacity of the arena after 2018 reopening is 7,166. This arena is usually used for badminton tournaments. Its maiden event was the 1961 Thomas Cup. It was also used during the 1962 Asian Games and was renovated to host the 2018 edition. Its first post-renovation event was the 2018 Indonesia Masters. During the latter Games, it hosted the badminton and later stages of basketball events. The arena originally was planned to stage the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup and becoming the only Indonesian venue in the three-country joint bid but was moved to a newly-built arena inside the complex. Lin Ying (, or Lam Ying in Cantonese, born 1963) is a Chinese former badminton player and one of the most successful doubles specialists in the sport's modern history. During her 9-year career representing China's national badminton team, she won women's doubles at many world class tournaments and played on China's dominant Uber Cup teams of the 1980s. Wu Dixi (, born 1962 in Nanhai, Guangdong) is a retired Chinese female badminton player. Career Wu was part of a cadre of Chinese players who dominated women's international badminton after China became a member of the International Badminton Federation in 1981. She won the 1982 and 1984 All-England Championships and the 1983 IBF World Championships in women's doubles with Lin Ying. Wu played on the world champion Chinese Uber Cup (women's international) teams of 1984 and 1986. Verawaty Fajrin
Verawaty Fadjrin (; 1 October 1957 – 21 November 2021) was an Indonesian badminton player who won international titles spanning from the late 1970s to the end of the 1980s. Tall and powerful, at one time or another she played each of the three variations of the sport (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles) at the highest world level. Career During a relatively brief period as a regular singles competitor, Fadjrin won the 1980 IBF World Championships in Jakarta over fellow countrywoman Ivana Lie. She had been runner-up to Denmark's Lene Køppen at the All England Open Championships that year. She won the Southeast Asian Games title in 1981 and the Indonesia Open in 1982. Wu Jianqiu (, born 1962) is a retired female badminton player from China. Career Wu was one of China's leading combination women's singles and doubles players in the first several years after her country joined the International Badminton Federation (now Badminton World Federation). She won the Danish Open women's singles in 1982 (the first of the two Danish Opens that were played that year). In 1983 she won the prestigious All-England Open women's doubles title with Xu Rong and was runner-up in the singles to fellow countrywoman Zhang Ailing. Li Lingwei (, born January 4, 1964) is a Chinese badminton player of the 1980s. She was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee in 2012, and in December 2016, she was elected Vice President of the Chinese Olympic Committee. Li Yongbo
Li Yongbo (; born September 18, 1962) is a retired Chinese male badminton player and the former head coach of Chinese National Badminton Team. Career As a player, he was a men's doubles specialist noted for his quickness, reflexes, and power. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s he shared numerous international titles with his regular partner Tian Bingyi. They were contemporaries and rivals of the famous Korean pair Park Joo-bong and Kim Moon-soo, largely dividing badminton's biggest doubles events between them for about eight seasons.
