1986 Super League Of Malawi
The 1986 Super League of Malawi was the first season of Super League of Malawi, the top professional league for association football clubs in Malawi. Overview Top five clubs from Blantyre and Districts Football League (BDFL) and top three from Lilongwe and Districts Football League (LDFL) were invited to participate in the inaugural national league championship. Two clubs from Blantyre, Limbe Leaf Wanderers and Hardware Stars indicated they would not participate, but LLW changed its decision, while ADMARC Tigers replaced Hardware Stars. The other three teams in Blantyre were the Red Lions, Bata Bullets and Berec Power Pack who, through a new sponsorship agreement, changed to MDC United. The Lilongwe clubs were MITCO FC, Civo United and Silver Strikers. The home and away format was played on three rounds with Gillette Nacet as the first sponsor. Super League of Malawi, also known as the TNM Super League for sponsorship reasons, is the top football division in Malawi. Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Malawi Regional Football Leagues. Malawian mobile telecommunications company TNM sponsors the league with K65 million annually. History It was created in 1986 and was first sponsored by Gillet Nacet. It was composed of eight teams: five teams from Blantyre and Districts Football League (BDFL) and three teams from Lilongwe and Districts Football League (LDFL). MDC United FC ''(Malawi Development Corporation United Football Club)'' was an association football club based in Lilongwe, Central Region of Malawi. Established in 1976, the club were one of the founder members of the Super League of Malawi in 1986 season. History The club was founded in 1976 in the capital Lilongwe as Berec Power Pack. On 2 June 1984, Berec Power Pack lifted the Kamuzu Cup after coming from behind to beat CIVO United 3–2. In the 1987–88 season, MDC United, under coach Henry Moyo, won the Super League championship and became the first team in Malawi to clinch the league title without losing any game. The club remained in the top flight until the 2004 season after club officials announced the disappearance of the team due to sponsorship problems. Civil Service United Football Club-Civo (CIVO United), which represents Civil Services, is a Malawian football (soccer) club based in Lilongwe area 9, the team currently plays in the TNM Super League, the top division of Malawi football. The team is now led by an executive committee which is chaired by Mr Victor Lungu and the current General Secretary is Edgar Chipalanjira. Red Lions Football Club is a Malawian football (soccer) club based in Zomba, Southern Region and currently playing in the TNM Super League, the top division of Malawian football. History The Red Lions FC is a military football club from Zomba, the old capital of Malawi. In the past the club was predominantly made of soldiers.
