1986 Brisbane Rugby League Season
The 1986 Brisbane Rugby League premiership was the 77th season of Brisbane's professional rugby league football competition. Nine teams from across Brisbane competed for the premiership, which culminated in a grand final match between the Wynnum-Manly and Past Brothers clubs. The season was notable as premiers Wynnum-Manly became the first club to complete a "grand slam" of all four major titles in a single BRL season, winning the pre-season competition, the Winfield State League, the Woolies Trophy (contested between the two sides leading the Winfield premiership at the end of the first round-robin), and the Winfield Cup premiership itself. Wynnum-Manly Seagulls
The Wynnum-Manly Seagulls are an Australian rugby league football club based at Kougari Oval, in Brisbane's bayside suburb of Manly West, Queensland, Manly West, which neighbours the suburb of Wynnum, Queensland, Wynnum. They competed in the Brisbane Rugby League premiership, Brisbane Rugby League from 1951 to 1997. Since 1996 they have competed in the Queensland Cup. Their jersey is red, green and white. From 1995 to 2005 they were known as the Wynnum Seagulls. Allan Border Field
Allan Border Field is a cricket ground in the Brisbane suburb of Albion in Queensland. The Australian Cricket Academy has been based at the oval since 2004 using it as a base for the development of elite cricketers throughout Australia. It was formerly known as ''Neumann Oval'' and was home to the Fortitude Valley Diehards rugby league team from 1909 until 1995. The oval was named for Fred "Firpo" Neumann, Valley's club captain (and later president) and Queensland and Australian representative footballer. Queensland Cricket purchased the ground not long after Valley's relocation and named it in honour of former Australian cricket captain Allan Border. The ground is used as a training facility for the Queensland Bulls and more recently the Australian cricket team. The capacity of the ground is 6,300, which is much smaller than the Gabba. Norm Carr
Norm Carr (born 20 February 1955) is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. A Queensland State of Origin representative forward, he played his entire club career in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for Souths and Wests, winning grand finals with both. Biography Born in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Carr played for Brisbane Wests in the QRL State League. He scored a try in Brisbane's 1979 Amco Cup final loss to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Carr's three-game sojourn in the Maroon jumper began off the bench in 1980, but didn't play as he wasn't called upon by coach John McDonald. He actually played in 1981. Davies Park
Davies Park is a sporting venue in the suburb of West End in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is located at the corner of Jane St, Montague Road & Riverside Drive, West End. Souths Magpies
The Souths Logan Magpies, more commonly referred to by their former names Southern Suburbs Magpies, or South Brisbane Magpies, or often simply referred to as Souths, are a rugby league football club based in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Australia. They play in the Intrust Super Cup, and although officially are a newer club (having been formed in 2003), they have roots tracing back (as Souths Magpies) to as early as 1910, the second year of rugby league in Queensland. Mark Murray (rugby League)
Mark Murray (born 1 May 1959) is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. He represented Australia in test matches and Queensland in the State of Origin. His position of choice was . Murray has also coached in the National Rugby League and State of Origin. Playing career Murray, a qualified teacher, was an instrumental player in the early Queensland State of Origin sides, and played 17 games (15 State of Origin) between 1981 and 1986. Darryl Van De Velde
Darryl van de Velde (born 3 October 1951) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer, coach and administrator. He played club football in Queensland for Souths and represented his state on one occasion in 1977. After playing he coached the Brisbane Rugby League premiership's Redcliffe side in 1986 and 1987, taking his club to consecutive grand finals. He was then replaced by Graham Olling. Van de Velde was part of an unsuccessful syndicate to form the first New South Wales Rugby League premiership club in Queensland. He then embarked on a coaching career in England with Castleford in 1988, Darryl van de Velde was the coach in Castleford's 12–28 defeat by Wigan in the 1991–92 Challenge Cup Final during the 1991–92 season at Wembley Stadium, London on Saturday 2 May 1992, in front of a crowd of 77,386, before leaving in 1993. Trevor Bailey (born 28 September 1961) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. He played in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for the Brothers club and in the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership for the St. George Dragons. Ross Strudwick
Ross Strudwick (born 1950) is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. An Australian international, New South Wales and Queensland representative halfback of the 1970s, he played club football in the New South Wales Rugby Football League Premiership for St. George and in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership for Fortitude Valley. Strudwick later embarked on a coaching career in Queensland and England. Playing Strudwick started his career in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership with St. George Dragons in 1969. Craig Grauf
Craig Grauf (born 24 July 1967) is a former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. Playing career Grauf, a talented halfback or five-eighth, started his first-grade career in the Brisbane competition in 1986 for the Norths Devils when coach Greg Oliphant decided to give the then 18-year-old a shock call-up. Not only was he promoted to the top-grade, but he also became the BRL's youngest-ever captain in the process. Grauf cemented his spot in first-grade for Norths and was instrumental in the club's much improved 1987 season which saw them reach the preliminary final. Greg Oliphant
Greg Oliphant (born 22 June 1950) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer, a state and national representative who made one Kangaroo tour. Oliphant played in the New South Wales Rugby League for the two seasons of 1978-1979 with the Balmain Tigers. Prior to and after those years he played in the Brisbane Rugby League with Wests, Valleys and Redcliffe. He made his international debut off the reserve bench in the first Test of the 1978 domestic series against New Zealand and then started in the 2nd Test. He was selected for the 1978 Kangaroo tour but played only four tour matches with his rival Tommy Raudonikis the selectors' preferred Test halfback.
