1984 FIBA AmeriCup
The 1984 Tournament of the Americas, since 2005 called the FIBA Americas Championship or FIBA AmeriCup, was the 2nd edition of this basketball tournament, hosted in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 15–24 May 1984. The outcome would determine the three berths allocated to the Americas for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and five berths for the 1986 FIBA World Championship in Spain. The United States did not participate in the tournament, claiming host-courtesy. Brazil was undefeated in the round robin tournament and were accompanied to the Olympic games by Canada and Uruguay. Qualification Eight teams promoted from the respective zone tournaments in 1982 and 1983 to the 1984 tournament; Canada qualified automatically since they are one of only two members of the North America zone. Venezuela withdrew from the tournament. The 1980 Tournament of the Americas, since 2005 called the FIBA Americas Championship or the FIBA AmeriCup, was the inaugural edition of this basketball tournament, and it was hosted by Puerto Rico in San Juan from April 18 to April 25, 1980. The berths allocated to the Americas for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow were determined. The United States did not participate in the tournament. Puerto Rico won the tournament by going 5-1 in the round robin. The Canadian men's national basketball team represents Canada in international basketball competitions since 1923. They are overseen by Canada Basketball, the governing body of basketball in Canada. FIBA AmeriCup
The FIBA AmeriCup (previously known as the FIBA Americas Championship) is the Americas Basketball Championship that takes place every four years between national teams of the Western Hemisphere continents. Since FIBA organised the entire Western Hemisphere west of the Atlantic Ocean under one zone, countries from North America, Central America, the Caribbean and South America compete in this tournament. Through the 2015 edition, the Americas Championship took place every two years, and was also a qualifying tournament for the FIBA World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games.
