1984 California Bowl
The 1984 California Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 15, 1984 at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California. The game pitted the UNLV Rebels and the Toledo Rockets. Background The Rebels rebounded from a 7–4 year in 1983 to win the Pacific Coast Athletic Association title with a perfect conference record, with their only losses being to Hawaii and SMU. This was UNLV's first ever bowl game appearance. The Rockets started the season 5–0–1, with victories over four conference opponents and a tie at Ohio. Harvey Leslie Hyde (born July 13, 1939) is an American sports journalist and former football coach. California Bowl
The California Bowl (later the California Raisin Bowl) was a post-season college football bowl game played annually at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California, from 1981 to 1991. The game featured the champions of the Big West Conference (known prior to 1988 as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) and the Mid-American Conference. In 1988, the California Raisin Advisory Board purchased the naming rights to the bowl. The game was dealt a severe blow in 1992 when Fresno State moved to the Western Athletic Conference. The MAC and Big West then moved their tie-ins to Las Vegas, Nevada and created the Las Vegas Bowl. The California Bowl made plans to hold the 1992 game without tie-ins, but was unable to find a new sponsor. When organizers came up short of a $1.75 million fundraising goal, the NCAA pulled the bowl's certification. 1995 Las Vegas Bowl
The 1995 Las Vegas Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 14 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Whitney, Nevada. The fourth edition of the annual Las Vegas Bowl, the Thursday night game was a bowl rematch of the Toledo Rockets and Nevada Wolf Pack, who had played in Reno during the regular season. Toledo came into the game undefeated at 10–0–1, and Nevada had two losses. This was the first Division I-A game to go into overtime, as the overtime rule was adopted starting with the 1995 bowl season. It remains the only Las Vegas Bowl to go to overtime, with Toledo winning 40–37 and capping an undefeated season. The 1994 Las Vegas Bowl featured the UNLV Rebels and the Central Michigan Chippewas in a bowl rematch of a regular season game between the two teams. Background Central Michigan was in its first year under Dick Flynn, who lead them to a Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship. UNLV tied for second in the Big West Conference as they were making their second bowl game in ten years under first-year head coach Jeff Horton. Ickey Woods
Elbert L. "Ickey" Woods (born February 28, 1966) is a former American football running back who played for the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League from 1988 through 1991. He played college football at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is best remembered for his "Ickey Shuffle" end zone dance, performed each time he scored a touchdown. Randall Cunningham
Randall Wade Cunningham Sr. (born March 27, 1963) is a former American football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 16 seasons. He spent the majority of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles and is also known for his Minnesota Vikings tenure. A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Cunningham is third in quarterback rushing yards. After earning first-team All-American honors at UNLV, Cunningham was selected in the second round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Eagles, where he spent his first 11 seasons. The Big West Conference (BWC) is an American collegiate athletic conference whose member institutions participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The conference was originally formed on July 1, 1969, as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA), and in 1988 was renamed the Big West Conference. The conference stopped sponsoring college football after the 2000 season. The 1984 Toledo Rockets football team was an American football team that represented the University of Toledo in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) during the 1984 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their third season under head coach Dan Simrell, the Rockets compiled an 8–3–1 record (7–1–1 against MAC opponents), won the MAC championship, lost to L 13–30 vs. UNLV in the California Bowl (13–30), and outscored all opponents by a combined total of 187 to 164.
