1983–84 Port Vale F.C. Season
The 1983–84 season was Port Vale's 72nd season of football in the English Football League, and first (15th overall) back in the Third Division following their promotion from the Fourth Division. The club suffered a horrendous start, and John McGrath lost his job before Christmas; he was replaced by his assistant John Rudge. Rudge instigated an immense turnaround in results, but Vale still ended up relegated, six points shy of safety. Ireland international Eamonn O'Keefe was top-scorer and Player of the Year, and young Mark Bright showed his potential, though left at the end of the season. English Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. Gary Pollard
Gary Pollard (born 30 December 1959) is an English former footballer. A defender, he scored two goals in 192 league appearances in a 12-year career in the Football League. He played for Chesterfield, Port Vale, Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Eastwood Town, and Goole Town. He was promoted out of the Fourth Division with Mansfield in 1985–86, and won the Football League Trophy with the club in 1987. Career Pollard began his career at Chesterfield, who finished ninth in the Third Division in 1977–78. Arthur Cox's "Spireites" posted a 20th-place finish in 1978–79, before finishing one place and one point outside the promotion places in 1979–80. They finished fifth in 1980–81 under the stewardship of Frank Barlow, just three points short of promotion. Tommy Gore
Thomas John Gore (born 26 November 1953) is an English former footballer who played as a midfielder. He played 257 league appearances in a six-year career in the Football League. He began his career at Liverpool, playing in the 1972 FA Youth Cup final. He later joined Tranmere Rovers, before signing with Wigan Athletic in January 1974. He helped the club to the Northern Premier League title in 1974–75, as well as second-place finishes in 1973–74 and 1977–78, before Wigan were granted Football League status in 1978. Voted the club's Player of the Year in 1978–79, he moved on to Bury in October 1980. During his time at Wigan he also spent two summers in the United States with Dallas Tornado. He switched to Port Vale in July 1983, before a neck injury forced his retirement in October 1984. In professional association football, a free transfer, also known as a Bosman transfer, involves a professional association football club releasing a player when the player's contract has expired or made available just before the end of the contract. The player can then go on to sign for any club offering a contract to them. Mark Bright
Mark Abraham Bright (born 6 June 1962) is an English sports correspondent and former footballer. Born to a Gambian father and English mother, he was adopted into a foster family in Stoke-on-Trent at an early age. He played non-league football for local side Leek Town, before joining nearby Football League side Port Vale in 1981. He turned professional at the club the following year, though would only enjoy an extended run in the first-team during the 1983–84 season. He signed with First Division club Leicester City in June 1984. He failed to find success with Leicester however and was sold on to Crystal Palace in November 1986. He helped Palace to win promotion out of the Second Division via the play-offs in 1989 and went on to play on the losing side of the 1990 FA Cup final, before winning the Full Members' Cup in 1991.
