1983 WTA Swiss Open
The 1983 WTA Swiss Open was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Lugano, Switzerland that was part of the 1983 Virginia Slims World Championship Series. It was the eighth edition of the tournament and was held from 9 May until 14 May 1983. Finals Singles The singles tournament was cancelled following the conclusion of the third round due to rain. Doubles Christiane Jolissaint / Marcella Mesker defeated Petra Delhees / Patricia Medrado 6–2, 3–6, 7–5 * It was Jolissaint's 1st career title. It was Mesker's 1st career title. Notes * The tournament was halted by rain delays on 23 occasions over the first five days. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Marcella Mesker (born 23 May 1959) is a former professional tennis player from the Netherlands. Mesker was active on the WTA Tour from 1979 to 1988 and reached the final of the Australian Open Women's Doubles in 1979. She also reached the semifinals of the US Open Women's Doubles in 1984. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). 1983 Virginia Slims World Championship Series
The 1983 Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the 13th season since the foundation of the Women's Tennis Association. It commenced on January 3, 1983, and concluded on March 4, 1984, after 64 events. The Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the elite tour for professional women's tennis organised by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). It was held in place of the WTA Tour from 1983 until 1987 and featured tournaments that had previously been part of the ''Toyota Series'' and the ''Avon Series''. The circuit consisted of 48 tournaments in nine countries, including the four Grand Slam tournaments, and culminated in the season-ending Virginia Slims Championships played in February 1984. Petra Jauch-Delhees (born 28 March 1959), born Petra Delhees, is a former professional tennis player from Switzerland. Biography Delhees, a left-hander, began playing Federation Cup tennis for Switzerland as a 17-year old in 1976. She was a member of the 1981 and 1983 Swiss semifinal teams, the latter her final season. She finished with a 33-15 overall record, at the time the Swiss record for the number of wins. Her doubles partnership with Christiane Jolissaint, which resulted in ten wins, is the most prolific in the Fed Cup for Switzerland. ''The Ledger'' is a daily newspaper serving Lakeland, Florida, and the Polk County area. The paper was founded on August 22, 1924, as the ''Lakeland Evening Ledger''. The Ladies Open Lausanne originally founded in 1899 as the Swiss International Championships. It is a women's professional tennis tournament which is currently played in Lausanne but has played in a number of locations in Switzerland. History The Swiss International Championships was founded in 1897 as a men's only event and staged at the Grasshopper Club, Zurich under the auspices of the Swiss Lawn Tennis Association.
