American Soccer League (1933–1983)
The American Soccer League has been a name used by four different professional soccer sports leagues in the United States. The second American Soccer League was established in summer 1933 following the collapse of the original American Soccer League, which lasted from 1921 until spring 1933. The new league was created on a smaller scale and with smaller budgets. This league existed until over-expansion and financial limitations led to its collapse in 1983. Two successor leagues later operated. History In the fall of 1933, the second American Soccer League was established, surviving until 1983. Like the original ASL, this league operated primarily in the Northeastern United States for much of its existence. Curtis Leeper
Curtis Leeper (born December 28, 1955) is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League and American Soccer League. Leeper attended Florida International University, playing on the men's soccer team. In 1977, he turned professional with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the North American Soccer League. He spent two seasons with the Strikers before being traded to the Philadelphia Fury during the 1979 season. In the fall of 1979, he began his indoor career with the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Tony Suarez
Antonio Jose "Tony" Suarez (February 2, 1956 – April 18, 2007) was a Cuban-American soccer forward. He played professionally in the American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League and was the 1981 American Soccer League Rookie of the Year. Youth Suarez was born in Havana, Cuba. In 1972 his parents, Roberto and Miriam Suarez, left Cuba and relocated their family in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Suarez attended Myers Park High School. He graduated from Myers Park in 1974, enrolled in Appalachian State University, then transferred to Belmont Abbey College, where he received a B.A. in Business Management. Professional Suarez had an unsuccessful initial tryout for the Carolina Lightnin' of the American Soccer League. Mike Powers (soccer)
Mike Powers is a retired American soccer midfielder who played sixteen years with the Dallas Sidekicks. He also played in the second American Soccer League and the United Soccer League. Player Youth Powers attended Rockhurst University, playing for the men/s soccer team from 1975 to 1980. He is a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Professional In 1979, the Wichita Wings selected Powers in the Territorial Round (10th overall) of the Major Indoor Soccer League Draft. He played from 1980 to 1983 with the Wings. In addition to playing indoors with the Wings, Powers also played three seasons, from 1981 to 1983 with the Detroit Express of the American Soccer League. The Express won the 1982 ASL championship. Steve Westbrook
Steve Westrook is a retired American soccer defender who played professionally in the American Soccer League, United Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. In 1977, Westbrook graduated from Christian Brothers College High School. He attended Indiana University, playing as a forward on the men's soccer team from 1977 to 1980. The Hoosiers finished runner-up in the 1978 and 1980 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. In 1981, Westbrook signed with the Detroit Express of the American Soccer League and was moved to defensive midfielder. He was a 1981 First Team All Star. Rich Reice is a retired American professional soccer forward who played in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League, American Soccer League and United Soccer League. Reice attended Penn State University where he was a 1977 First Team All American soccer player. In 1978, the Philadelphia Fury selected Reice in the first round of the North American Soccer League draft. In 1980, he played for the Pennsylvania Stoners of the American Soccer League. John Dolinsky
John Dolinsky is a retired German-American soccer player who played professionally in the Major Indoor Soccer League, American Soccer League, United Soccer League and American Indoor Soccer Association. He also coached in the American Indoor Soccer Association where he was the 1989 Coach of the Year. Player College Born in West Germany, Dolinsky grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Lewis University where from 1972 to 1975 he was a four year starter on the men's soccer team. He was a 1973 and 1974 Honorable Mention (third team) All American. Mike Barry (footballer)
Michael James Barry (born 22 May 1953) is a former professional footballer midfielder. Barry was born in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Barry played for Huddersfield Town, Carlisle United and Bristol Rovers in England before moving to the United States to play for the Columbus Magic of the American Soccer League. In 1975, he played on loan from Carlisle United to the Washington Diplomats of the North American Soccer League. Barry began the 1979–80 Major Indoor Soccer League with the Pittsburgh Spirit, but moved to the Cleveland Force after three games. He remained with the Force through the 1980–81 season and the beginning of the 1981–82 season. The Force sent Barry to the New Jersey Rockets midway through the season. Don Tobin
Don Tobin (1 November 1955) is an English retired footballer who played in leagues including the English Football League, the League of Ireland, the American Soccer League, and Major Indoor Soccer League. Since 1995 he has coached at various levels in the Tampa Bay Area, most often with women's teams. Playing career As a youth, Tobin spent a brief period with the Everton Academy before catching on at age 16 with the First Division senior club, Everton in 1971. From there he moved to Rochdale of the Third Division for three years. He spent one season at Witton Albion and one in Ireland at Sligo Rovers before moving to the United States.
