The 1980–81 AHL season was the 45th season of the American Hockey League. Nine teams played 80 games each in the schedule. The Hershey Bears finished first overall in the regular season. The Adirondack Red Wings won their first Calder Cup championship. American Hockey League
The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in the United States and Canada that serves as the primary Minor league#Ice hockey, developmental league for the National Hockey League (NHL). Since the 2010–11 AHL season, 2010–11 season, every team in the league has an affiliation agreement with one NHL team. When NHL teams do not have an AHL affiliate, players are assigned to AHL teams affiliated with other NHL teams. Twenty-six AHL teams are located in the United States and the remaining six are in Canada. The league offices are located in Springfield, Massachusetts, and its current president is Scott Howson. In general, a player must be at least 18 years of age to play in the AHL or not currently be beholden to a junior ice hockey team. Springfield Indians
The Springfield Indians were a minor professional ice hockey franchise, originally based in West Springfield, Massachusetts and later Springfield, Massachusetts. The Indians were founding members of the American Hockey League. They were in existence for a total of 60 seasons from 1926 to 1994, with three interruptions. The Indians had two brief hiatuses from 1933 to 1935, and from 1942 to 1946. The team was known as the Syracuse Warriors from 1951 to 1954; in addition, the team was named the Springfield Kings from 1967 to 1975. The Indians won seven Calder Cup championships; six as the Indians, one in 1974 sandwiched between three consecutive from 1960 to 1962 and two consecutive in 1990 and 1991; and one as the Kings, in 1971. Reg Thomas (ice Hockey)
Reginald Kenneth Thomas (born April 21, 1953) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played primarily in the World Hockey Association (WHA). Career After a standout junior career with the London Knights, in which he scored 309 points in only three seasons, he was drafted by both the Los Angeles Sharks of the WHA and the Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). Thomas played seven seasons in the WHA for the Sharks, Michigan Stags, Baltimore Blades, Indianapolis Racers, and Cincinnati Stingers. After the dissolution of the WHA he played 39 NHL games for the Quebec Nordiques in the NHL, and ultimately retired from hockey in 1985 after a spell in Austria for WAT Stadlau. Jean-François Sauvé
Jean-François Sauvé (born January 23, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. He played in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres and Quebec Nordiques. Biography Sauve was born in Sainte-Geneviève, Quebec. As a youth, he played in the 1972 and 1973 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with a minor ice hockey teams from Pierrefonds, Quebec, and from the North shore of Montreal. In his NHL career, Sauvé appeared in 290 games. He scored sixty-five goals and added 138 assists. Sauvé is the brother of former NHL goaltender Bob Sauvé and the uncle of former NHL goaltender Philippe Sauvé. Guy Carbonneau
Joseph Harry Guy Carbonneau (born March 18, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, coach and executive in the National Hockey League. He was also the president of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Chicoutimi Saguenéens. Carbonneau was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2019. Playing career Carbonneau started his hockey career in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Chicoutimi Saguenéens.
