Sittard
Sittard (; ) is a city in the Netherlands, situated in the southernmost province of Limburg. The town is part of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen and has almost 37.500 inhabitants in 2016. In its east, Sittard borders the German municipality of Selfkant (in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia). The city centre is located at 45 m above sea level. Athletics at the 1980 Summer Olympics was represented by 38 events. They were held in the Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium at Luzhniki (south-western part of Moscow) between July 24 and August 1. There were a total number of 959 participating athletes from 70 countries. Petra Pfaff
Petra Pfaff (born 16 October 1960 in Hoyerswerda) is a retired East Germany, East German 400 metres hurdler. In 1980, a special edition of the 1980 World Championships in Athletics, World Championships was staged in Sittard, holding events not yet on the Olympic programme. Pfaff won the bronze medal in the 400 m hurdles behind compatriots Bärbel Broschat and Ellen Neumann. Pfaff later won the silver medal in the women's 400m hurdles at the 1982 European Championships in Athletics, 1982 European Championships behind Sweden's Ann-Louise Skoglund. In 1983 she finished fourth at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics - Women's 400 metre hurdles, World Championships. Her result was 54.64 seconds, the best time she had in her career. Ellen Neumann
Ellen Fiedler ( Neumann, born 26 November 1958 in Demmin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) is a former East German 400 metres hurdler. She won the bronze medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, in a career best time of 53.63 seconds. This ranks her third among German 400 m hurdlers, only behind Sabine Busch and Cornelia Ullrich. She also won the 1981 IAAF World Cup event, took the silver medal in the hurdles at the 1980 World Championships in Athletics, won the bronze medal at the 1983 World Championships and finished sixth at the 1986 European Championships. At the 1983 World Championships she also won a gold medal in the 4 × 400 metres relay. Although it was Gesine Walther, Sabine Busch, Marita Koch and Dagmar Rübsam who ran in the final, Fiedler had run in the qualifying round. Ingrid Kristiansen (née Christensen on 21 March 1956) is a Norwegian former athlete. She was one of the best female long-distance runners during the 1980s. She is a former world record holder in the 5000 metres, 10,000 metres and the marathon (at one point in time she held those records simultaneously). Kristiansen was a World Champion on the track, roads and cross-country, becoming the first athlete to win World titles on all three surfaces. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, she finished fourth in the first women's Olympic marathon. Karoline Nemetz
Karoline Nemetz (married name: Ettemark; born 28 June 1958) is a Sweden, Swedish former middle-distance running, middle- and long-distance runner. Nemetz grew up in Eskilstuna and began competing in athletics (sport), athletics and skiing. She eventually settled on running as her focus and made her breakthrough at national level in 1978 by winning the 1500 metres and 3000 metres titles at the Swedish Athletics Championships. Athletics At The 1976 Summer Olympics
At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, 37 events were contested in athletics. There were a total number of 1005 participating athletes from 80 countries. The men's 50 kilometres walk competition was dropped from the Olympic athletics programme, despite its constant presence at the games since 1932. The IAAF chose to host its own world championship event instead, a month and a half after the Olympics. The Western Bloc, also known as the Free Bloc, the Capitalist Bloc, the American Bloc, and the NATO Bloc, was a coalition of countries that were officially allied with the United States during the Cold War of 1947–1991.
