1978 World Figure Skating Championships
The 1978 World Figure Skating Championships were held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada from March 1 to 6. At the event, sanctioned by the International Skating Union, medals were awarded in men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. The ISU Representative was Jacques Favart of France. The ISU Technical Delegates were Josef Dědič of Czechoslovakia and Charles DeMore of the United States. Vern Taylor of Canada became the first person to land a triple axel (albeit over rotated), in competition. Ottawa

Jacques Favart
Jacques Favart (30 July 1920 – 27 September 1980) was a French sports official and figure skating, figure skater. He won the French Figure Skating Championships in men's singles in 1942. As a pair skater, he competed with his wife Denise Favart from 1946 to 1950. They placed 14th at the 1948 Winter Olympics. He served as president of the International Skating Union from 1967 to 1980, and of Fédération Française des Sports de Glace from 1968 to 1969. He was inaugurated in the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1993. Krisztina Regőczy
Krisztina Regőczy (born 19 April 1955) is a former ice dancer from Hungary. Competing with András Sallay, she won the gold medal at the 1980 World Figure Skating Championships and the silver at that year's Winter Olympics. Regőczy coached in the United States for a number of years before returning to Budapest. She is the figure skating sports director for the International Skating Union. Andrei Minenkov
Andrei Olegovich Minenkov (russian: Андрей Олегович Миненков; born 6 December 1954) is a Russian retired ice dancer who represented the Soviet Union. With his wife Irina Moiseeva, he is the 1976 Olympic silver medalist, 1980 Olympic bronze medalist, and two-time world champion (1975 and 1977). Career Irina Moiseeva and Andrei Minenkov met at the rink when they were six years old and began skating together in 1967. They had their breakthrough during the 1974–1975 season. They were third at the Soviet Championships, behind Lyudmila Pakhomova/ Aleksandr Gorshkov and Natalia Linichuk/Gennadi Karponosov, and placed just off the podium at the 1975 European Championships. Randy Gardner (figure Skater)
Randy Gardner (born December 2, 1958) is an American former pair skater. Together with Tai Babilonia, he won the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships and five U.S. Figure Skating Championships (1976–1980). The pair qualified for the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Career Babilonia and Gardner began skating together when Babilonia was eight and Gardner ten. Their first coach was Mabel Fairbanks, and later they were coached by John Nicks. The pair became five-time U.S. national champions and won the gold medal at the 1979 World Championships. They were medal favorites at the 1980 Winter Olympics but were forced to withdraw due to a thigh injury to Gardner. Tai Reina Babilonia (born September 22, 1959) is an American former pair skater. Together with Randy Gardner, she won the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships and five U.S. Figure Skating Championships (1976–1980). The pair qualified for the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Career Babilonia and Gardner began skating together at eight and ten years old when skating coach Mabel Fairbanks needed a young pair team for a skating show in Culver City, California. Uwe Bewersdorf
Uwe Bewersdorf (born 4 November 1958 in Freital, Bezirk Dresden, East Germany) is a German former pair skater. Uwe Bewersdorf was a pair with Manuela Mager. He started to skate with the age of 7 at the club Betriebs-Sportbund-Gemeinschaft Post Dresden. Later the club was renamed into SC Einheit Dresden. He was representing East Germany (GDR). His coach was Uta Hohenhaus. The pair Mager/Bewersdorf was the first in the world to execute in competition a clean thrown loop. Because Manuela Mager finished her figure skating career in 1980 he had to change his skating partner. He teamed up with Marina Schulz. Susanna Driano (born May 28, 1957) is an American-Italian former competitive figure skater who competed for Italy. She is the 1978 World bronze medalist, a two-time European bronze medalist (1976, 1980), and a six-time Italian national champion (1975–80). Personal life Driano was born on May 28, 1957, in Seattle, Washington, to a Canadian-born mother and Italian father. Career Driano competed internationally for Italy. Linda Fratianne
Linda Sue Fratianne (born August 2, 1960) is an American former figure skater known for winning two World Championship titles (1977, 1979), four consecutive U.S. Championships (1977–1980), and a silver medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Personal life Fratianne was married to ski racer Nick Maricich. Career Throughout her figure skating career, Fratianne was coached by Frank Carroll. She remained loyal whilst other switched to get a better deal. Fratianne became the first female skater to land two different types of triple jumps (toe loop and Salchow) in her free skating programs in 1976 at the U.S. National Championships. Robin Cousins
Robin Cousins, MBE (born 17 August 1957) is a British former competitive figure skater who was BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1980. He was the 1980 Olympic champion, the 1980 European champion, a three-time World medalist (1978–1980) and four-time British national champion (1977–1980), winning all of these titles during his amateur career. He followed this with a successful career as a professional figure skater and later starred in ice shows as well as producing several of his own. He is able to spin in either direction, both clockwise and anti-clockwise, which is an unusual skill for a figure skater.
