1977–78 New England Whalers Season
The 1977–78 New England Whalers season was the Whalers' sixth season of operation in the World Hockey Association (WHA). This season saw the debut of Gordie Howe and his sons with the Whalers' franchise. The trio helped the Whalers advance to the Avco Cup final, where they were defeated by the Winnipeg Jets (1972–96), Winnipeg Jets. Jack Kelley (ice Hockey)
John Henry Kelley (July 10, 1927 – September 16, 2020) was an American ice hockey coach and a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. Kelley was the first general manager and head coach of the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA). During the 1972-73 season, he won the Howard Baldwin Trophy as the WHA coach of the year, and also led the Whalers to the Avco World Trophy. He previously served as head coach at Boston University, leading the Terriers to back-to-back NCAA hockey championships in 1971 and 1972. In his 10 year coaching career at Boston U (1962–71), he compiled a .720 winning percentage and won six Beanpot Tournaments. Kelley, who was born in Medford, Massachusetts, also played his college hockey at Boston U, participating in the NCAA Hockey Tournament in 1951 and 1952. Quebec Nordiques
The Quebec Nordiques (french: Nordiques de Québec, pronounced in Quebec French, in Canadian English; translated "Quebec City Northmen" or "Northerners") were a professional ice hockey team based in Quebec City. The Nordiques played in the World Hockey Association (1972–1979) and the National Hockey League (1979–1995). The franchise was relocated to Denver, Denver, Colorado in May 1995–96 NHL season, 1995 and renamed the Colorado Avalanche. They played their home games at the Colisée de Québec from 1972 to 1995. Brian Hill (ice Hockey)
Brian Nelson Hill (born January 12, 1957) is a Canadian-born Austrian former ice hockey right winger. He played 19 games in the National Hockey League with the Hartford Whalers during the 1979–80 season. He moved to Europe in 1980 and spent eight seasons playing in the Austrian Hockey League before retiring in 1988. While there Hill became an Austrian citizen and played for the Austrian national team at the 1986 and 1987 World Championship B Pools. Playing career Hill played junior hockey in the Western Canada Hockey League for the Medicine Hat Tigers, scoring 53 goals and 51 assists for 104 points in his final year in 1976-77. Hill was drafted 31st overall by the Atlanta Flames in the 1977 NHL amateur draft and 43rd overall by the New England Whalers in the 1977 WHA Amateur Draft. Moe Robinson
Morris Leslie Robinson (born May 29, 1957) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in one National Hockey League game for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1979–80 NHL season. Although his Hall of Fame brother Larry Robinson was with the Canadiens at that time, they did not play together as the older Robinson was out injured during Moe's brief recall from the AHL made to replace Larry on the roster. Moe Robinson's one NHL game came in Winnipeg on December 15, 1979, as he skated a half dozen shifts in a 6-2 road loss in the Canadiens' first meeting with the Winnipeg Jets which had recently come from the disbanded WHA. The only time that the Robinson brothers were paired together on the blueline in Habs' uniforms was in a 1979 exhibition game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Winnipeg Jets (1972-96)
The Winnipeg Jets are a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg. The team competes in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference, and is owned by True North Sports & Entertainment, playing its home games at Canada Life Centre. The Jets were established as the Atlanta Thrashers on June 25, 1997, and began play in the 1999–2000 NHL season. True North Sports & Entertainment then bought the team in May 2011, and relocated the franchise to Winnipeg prior to the 2011–12 season, making them the first NHL franchise to relocate since the Hartford Whalers became the Carolina Hurricanes in 1997.
