1977 Manitoba General Election
The 1977 Manitoba general election was held on October 11, 1977 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservative Party, which took 33 seats out of 57. The governing New Democratic Party fell to 23 seats, while the Liberal Party won only one seat. Legislative Assembly Of Manitoba
The Legislative Assembly of Manitoba (french: Assemblée législative du Manitoba) is the deliberative assembly of the Manitoba Legislature in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Fifty-seven members are elected to this assembly at provincial general elections, all in single-member constituencies with first-past-the-post voting. Bills passed by the Legislative Assembly are given royal assent by the King of Canada in Right of Manitoba, represented by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. The Manitoba Legislative Building is located in central Winnipeg. The Premier of Manitoba is Heather Stefanson and the current Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba is Myrna Driedger; both of whom belong to the Progressive Conservative Party. Jacob Froese
Jacob M. Froese (November 28, 1917 – June 14, 2003) was a politician in the Canadian province of Manitoba. He was the province's only Social Credit MLA between 1959 and 1973, and was the party's leader for most if not all of the period from 1959 to 1977. The son of Jacob J. Froese and Margaret Enns, Froese was born in Winkler, Manitoba to Jacob J. and Margaret (Enns) Froese. His Father was an Old Colony Mennonite Church bishop from 1936 to 1968. He was educated in the local school system and worked as a farmer, also becoming a leading figure in the Winkler Credit Union Society. He married Mary Peters in 1941, and together they had 10 children. Early in his life, he was a Young Liberal. Froese was elected to the Manitoba legislature for the riding of Rhineland in a November 1959 by-election, defeating a Progressive Conservative candidate by 91 votes. Brandon East (Manitoba Riding)
Brandon East is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It encompasses half of the City of Brandon, the other half being represented in Brandon West. Historical riding The original riding of Brandon East existed from 1886 to 1888, when the City and riding of Brandon was divided into two electoral districts for the first time. The city was re-established as a single riding in 1888. Current riding The modern riding of Brandon East was created in 1968, when the City of Brandon was again divided into two separate ridings. Harry Graham (Manitoba)
Harry Edward Graham (December 26, 1921 in Foxwarren, Manitoba – September 21, 2006 in Russell, Manitoba) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served as a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1969 to 1986. The son of George Malcolm Graham and Margaret Leckie, he was educated at the University of Manitoba, and worked as a farmer after his graduation. Graham served as Vice-Chairman of the Russell District Hospital, and was also the President of the Progressive Conservative Association in the federal riding of Marquette. In 1951, he married Velma Louise Murdoch. He first entered politics while helping a friend, Dr. Vern Rosnoski, who was a dentist, run for office. Stephen Patrick
Stephen Clifford Patrick (''né'' Patrebka, March 24, 1932 – January 11, 2014) was a Canadian politician and athlete. Patrick was a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1962 to 1977. Career Patrick played with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team for thirteen years. He became President and General-Manager of Patrick Agencies Ltd. (now known as Patrick Realty Ltd.), and was a Director of the Winnipeg Real Estate Bld. and the Pioneer Fraternal Association. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the provincial election of 1962, defeating incumbent Progressive Conservative George Johnson by 239 votes in the west-end Winnipeg riding of Assiniboia. Norma Price
Norma Lorraine Price (August 19, 1920 – February 24, 2008) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was a Progressive Conservative member of the Manitoba Legislature from 1977 to 1981, and served as a cabinet minister in the government of Sterling Lyon. Born Norma Lorraine Killeen, the daughter of Clement A. Killeen and Aurora Martel, she was educated at Immaculate Conception School and St. Mary's Academy. She married Howard Wesley Isidor, son of Mrs. A. Baldwin on February 1, 1940. She divorced Howard on 14 January 1959. Married James Percy Price sometime before 1963. She subsequently married John Heeney in about 1982, and remained married with him for 26 years until her death. Assiniboia is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was first created for the 1879 provincial election, was eliminated in 1888, and was re-established in 1903. It is located in the westernmost tip of the City of Winnipeg. James Erwin Downey (born August 10, 1942) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1977 to 1999, and served as a cabinet minister in the Progressive Conservative governments of Sterling Lyon and Gary Filmon. Early life Downey was born in Melita, Manitoba. He served as an Air Cadet, and received an Agriculture Diploma from the University of Manitoba. Before entering political life, he worked as a farmer and auctioneer. The Communist Party of Canada (Manitoba) is the provincial wing of the Communist Party of Canada for the province of Manitoba. Founded in 1921, it was an illegal organization for several years and its meetings were conducted with great secrecy. Until 1924, the "Workers Party" functioned as its public, legal face. For a period in the 1920s, the party was associated with the Canadian Labour Party. After 1920 it attracted former members of radical and syndicalist groups such as the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
