1977 Cleveland Mayoral Election
The 1977 Cleveland mayoral election took place on November 8, 1977, to elect the Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. The election was won by Dennis Kucinich. The election was officially nonpartisan, with the top two candidates from the October 4 primary advancing to the general election. In an upset defeat, incumbent mayor Ralph Perk failed to advance past the primary. Kucinich, at 31 years of age, became the youngest mayor of a major United States city. Dennis Kucinich
Dennis John Kucinich (; born October 8, 1946) is an American politician. A U.S. Representative from Ohio from 1997 to 2013, he was also a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States in 2004 and 2008. He ran for governor of Ohio in the 2018 election, losing in the primary to Richard Cordray. From 1977 to 1979, Kucinich served as the 53rd mayor of Cleveland, a tumultuous term in which he survived a recall election and was successful in a battle against selling the municipal electric utility before being defeated for reelection by George Voinovich. Due to redistricting following the 2010 state elections, Ohio's 10th congressional district was redrawn in southern Ohio. Edward Farrell "Ed" Feighan (born October 22, 1947) is a former American politician. He served as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and as a Democratic Party U.S. Representative from 1983 to 1993, serving Ohio's 19th congressional district. Early life and education Feighan was born in Lakewood, Ohio. He graduated in 1965 from St. Edward High School, an all-boys Catholic high school on Cleveland's west side. In 1969, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Loyola University in New Orleans, LA. He attended Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University while serving in the legislature and received his J.D. degree in 1978. Ralph Joseph Perk (January 19, 1914 – April 21, 1999) was an American politician of the Republican Party who served as the 52nd mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Early life Born to an ethnic Czech American family in Cleveland, Perk dropped out of high school at 15 and later took correspondence courses to earn his high-school diploma. He studied history, political science and mathematics at the Cleveland College of Case Western Reserve University and St. John's College in Cleveland. During the Great Depression he worked as a patternmaker, then worked with his brother George in running the Perk Coal and Ice Company. He went on to work in real estate, but returned to patternmaking during World War II to aid in the war effort, after the military rejected him due to earlier health problems resulting from kidney stones. Alyson Kennedy (born June 11, 1950) is an American activist and member of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP). She was a candidate in the 2019 Dallas mayoral election. She was the SWP's nominee for Vice President in the 2008 United States presidential election, President in the 2016 United States presidential election as well as their nominee for president in 2020.
