1976 Victorian State Election
The 1976 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 20 March 1976, was for the 47th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect 81 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. Since the previous election, there was an increase in the number of members of the Legislative Assembly by 8 and in the number of Council members by 8, though only 4 were elected at the 1976 election. Since the last election, the number of Legislative Assembly members was increased from 73 to 81 and the number of seats in the Legislative Council was increased from 36 to 44. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. Lou Lieberman
Louis Stuart Lieberman (born 13 May 1938) is an Australian politician and was a member of both the Victorian Legislative Assembly and the Australian House of Representatives. Born on 13 May 1938 at Swan Hill, Lou Lieberman was educated at Albury High School. He studied law while working as a law clerk at Tietyens Angel & Jackling and on becoming a barrister in 1961 became a partner. He bought the Wodonga practice and merged it with J. S. N. Harris in 1966. In 1978 he became a founding partner in the Wodonga law firm of Lieberman Harris Boyd. He also did National Service and served in 8/13 VMR (Victorian Mounted Rifles) working with Centurion tanks. Bruce Evans (politician)
Bruce James Evans (21 January 1925 – 8 November 2012) was an Australian politician. He was born in Bairnsdale to Joseph Evans, a farmer, and Daisy Shankly, a schoolteacher. He attended local state schools and became a bank officer for the Union Bank in 1941. In 1943 he enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force and went on to serve in South Africa, the United Kingdom and the Middle East as a wireless air gunner. On his return in 1946 he took up dairy farming at Lindenow, and became branch president of the Returned and Services League (1947–49, 1956–57). He was active in the local dairy farming community and also in the Country Party, serving as a national, branch and district secretary. Alan Henry Scanlan (born 23 June 1931) is an Australian politician. He was born in Caulfield to commercial traveller Edward Daniel John Scanlan and Winifred Bernice Fowler. He attended Melbourne High School and Melbourne Teachers' College, and worked as a teacher in London from 1958 to 1959. Kenneth Wheeler (politician)
Sir Kenneth Henry Wheeler (7 September 1912 – 10 May 1996) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mernda to farmer William Henry Wheeler and Alma Nellie Bodycoat. He worked on his father's farm from the age of thirteen, and then became a retail dairyman at Coburg in 1934. On 24 January 1934, he married Hazel Jean Collins, with whom he had two children. In 1950, he amalgamated his business with Croft Dairies, to form Metropolitan Dairies, of which he became manager in 1959. A Liberal Party member, he served on Coburg City Council from 1950 to 1959 and was mayor from 1955 to 1956. In 1958, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Essendon. Electoral District Of Essendon
The electoral district of Essendon is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first created in 1904 after the abolition of the larger Essendon and Flemington electorate, and covers some of the north-western suburbs of Melbourne, including Essendon, Moonee Ponds and Ascot Vale. The electorate was abolished in 1955, and Ascot Vale created, but in 1958, Ascot Vale was abolished and Essendon re-created. Essendon was held by the Liberals during the Bolte and Hamer governments, usually due to preferences from the Democratic Labor Party. The Liberals also won the seat after the Kennett landslide of 1992. Neville Read Hudson (10 October 1923 – 29 July 1980) was an Australian politician. Early life and family Neville Hudson was born in Brighton to accountant William Read Hudson and Nellie Frances Marion Downe. He attended Brighton Grammar School, and from 1941 to 1945 was a heavy bomber pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross. From 1945 to 1947 he worked with the CSIRO, and from 1948 ran a dry cleaning business in Werribee. On 19 December 1947 he married Valda Ellis, with whom he had three sons. He had a farm at Bega from 1964 to 1970, after which he returned to Werribee. Thomas Leslie Austin (24 September 1923 – 1 June 2002) was an Australian politician. He was born in Melbourne to Leslie Albert Austin, a farmer, and Nora Bradfute Cunningham. After attending Geelong Grammar School, he served in the Royal Australian Navy from 1941 to 1945 as a sub-lieutenant. On his return he was a woolclasser from 1946 to 1947, when he became a sharefarmer. He settled in Darlington in 1950.
