1976 Hamilton Mayoral By-election
The 1976 Hamilton mayoral by-election was held to fill the vacant position of Mayor of Hamilton, New Zealand, Mayor of Hamilton in New Zealand. The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method. Background Incumbent mayor Mike Minogue resigned mid-term after he was elected to parliament as MP for in November 1975. Seven candidates came forward to succeed him. A by-election for a seat on the Hamilton City Council (New Zealand), Hamilton City Council occurred concurrently after the resignation of Ian James Drabble, who had moved outside of Hamilton. Candidates Seven candidates were nominated, the largest field of candidates for a mayoral election since 1950. Bruce Craig Beetham (16 February 1936 – 3 May 1997) was an academic and politician from New Zealand, whose career spanned the 1970s and early 1980s. A lecturer at Hamilton, New Zealand, Hamilton's University of Waikato and at the Hamilton Teachers' Training College, he was elected leader of the Social Credit Party (New Zealand), Social Credit Political League (which he had joined in 1969) in 1972, at a time when the party was in disarray and many were questioning its chances of survival. A brilliant organiser and an electrifying speaker, Beetham succeeded in rebuilding the party, and by the late 1970s it was challenging the stranglehold on the two-party system of the long-dominant New Zealand National Party, National and New Zealand Labour Party, Labour parties.
