The 1974 Federation Cup was the 12th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. 29 nations participated in the tournament, which was held at the Naples Tennis Club in Naples, Italy, from 13–19 May. Australia defended their title, defeating United States in the final, in what was the fifth final featuring both United States and Australia. The 1973 Federation Cup was the 11th edition of the most important competition between national teams in women's tennis. 30 nations participated in the tournament, which was held at the Bad Homburg Tennis Club in Bad Homburg, West Germany from 30 April–6 May. Australia defeated South Africa in the final, winning the title without losing a rubber. Geraldine Barniville
Geraldine Barniville (nee Houlihan; born 7 November 1942) is an Irish former squash and tennis player. Barniville is a native of Birr in County Offaly and comes from a prominent legal family (of the D.A. Houlihan law firm). As a tennis player, Barniville won a record nine Carrickmines titles during her career, the first in 1963. At the 1964 U.S. National Championships she faced the eighth-seeded Carole Caldwell in the second round and pushed her to deep in the third set. She played in 10 Federation Cup ties for Ireland between 1964 and 1977. Despite not picking up squash until the age of 24, Barniville ended up competing at the World Championships. Christina Sandberg (born 11 January 1948) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. She reached the quarterfinals of the 1970 Australian Open in both the singles and doubles. She played for Sweden in the Federation Cup in 25 matches, and she notably defeated Virginia Wade in the first round of the 1968 Wimbledon Championships - Women's Singles. Virginia Ruzici (born 31 January 1955) is a former professional tennis player from Romania. She won the 1978 French Open singles championship. Career Ruzici became a professional tennis player in 1975. One of her main assets on court was her powerful forehand.
