1973 World Cup (men's Golf)
The 1973 World Cup took place 22–25 November at the Club de Golf Nueva Andalucía in Marbella, Spain. The name of the club was later changed to Real Club de Golf Las Brisas. It was the 21st World Cup event. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 49 teams. Each team consisted of two players from a country. Team Czechoslovakia of Jiri Dvorak and Jaromir Fuchs were notified, but withdraw from the tournament before it began. Also before the tournament begun, notable player withdrawals were Peter Thomson, selected to the Australian team, replaced by Errol Hardvigsen, Peter Oosterhuis, selected to the English team, replaced by Peter Wilcock, Terry Kendall, selected to the New Zealand team, replaced by Simon Owen and Brian Huggett, selected to the Welsh team, replaced by David Vaughan. David I. Vaughan (born 26 June 1948) is a Welsh professional golfer. Vaughan played on the European Tour where his best finishes were a pair of third places: 1972 Benson & Hedges Festival of Golf and 1977 Martini International. He represented Wales seven times in the World Cup. He was the professional at Vale of Llangollen Golf Club where he stayed until his retirement in 2013 after 32 years service. Philippe Toussaint
Philippe Toussaint (born 30 June 1949) was one of Belgium's most successful golfers. Toussaint was born in Brussels. As an amateur he won the Italian Amateur Championship, was runner up in the Belgian Amateur Championship, and twice represented Belgium in the Eisenhower Trophy. He turned professional in 1971 and joined the European Tour. He won one tournament during his time on the tour, at the 1974 Benson & Hedges Festival, when he edged out Bob Shearer in a sudden death playoff. Donald Swaelens
Donald Swaelens (1935 – 25 April 1975) was a Belgian professional golfer. Golf career Like his father Jules, Swaelens made his career as a club professional at Royal Latem Golf Club. He also worked as a touring professional, intermittently playing on the European circuit. He won the 1966 Woodlawn Tournament, played at the Ramstein Air Base in West Germany, the 1967 German Open, and the 1971 Agfa-Gevaert Tournament, also in West Germany. In 1972, Swaelens joined the European Tour during its inaugural season. Randall Vines (born 6 June 1945) is an Australian professional golfer. Vines was one of the top Australian golfers of his generation, winning a number of worldwide tournaments. He may be best remembered for his sterling 1968 season which included four significant worldwide wins across in Asia, Europe, and Australia, including a 17 stroke win at the Tasmanian Open. Roberto De Vicenzo (14 April 1923 – 1 June 2017) was a professional golfer from Argentina. He won a record 229 professional tournaments worldwide during his career, including seven on the PGA Tour and most famously the 1967 Open Championship. He is perhaps best remembered for signing an incorrect scorecard that kept him out of a playoff for the 1968 Masters Tournament. Fidel de Luca (29 April 1922 – 6 June 2007) was an Argentine professional golfer. Born in San Isidro, Buenos Aires, he worked as a caddie in Buenos Aires, before turning professional in 1948. De Luca won the Argentine Professional Ranking nine times, but only competed in three major championships, appearing twice in the British Open, in 1958 and 1960, and once in the Masters Tournament in 1962. Gary James Player DMS, OIG (born 1 November 1935) is a South African retired professional golfer who is widely considered to be one of the greatest golfers of all time. During his career, Player won nine major championships on the regular tour and nine major championships on the Champions Tour.
