1973 WANFL Season
The 1973 WANFL season was the 89th season of the Western Australian National Football League. It is most famous for Subiaco breaking the longest premiership drought in the history of the competition, winning for the first time since 1924 after having been a chopping block for most of the middle third of the century. Under the coaching of former champion Ross Smith, the Lions, as they became christened in July, bounced back from two disappointing seasons to lose only two of their final sixteen home-and-away games for their first minor premiership since 1935, then in a low-scoring Grand Final comfortably defeated a much more hardened West Perth team. Phil Smith (Australian Footballer)
Philip James Smith (15 October 1946 – 31 January 2010) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Geelong Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), the West Perth Football Club in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) and the Woodville Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Smith was recruited from Geelong Football League (GFL) club Newtown & Chilwell and, while making his senior VFL debut in 1968, he spent most of his time at Geelong in the reserves, making just four senior appearances in his first two seasons. Smith managed eight VFL games in the 1970 VFL season from which he kicked all of his 17 career goals. West Perth recruited Smith in 1971 and, playing as a full-forward, he was their leading-goalkicker for three successive seasons. Fremantle Oval
Fremantle Oval, also known by naming rights sponsorship as Fremantle Community Bank Oval, is a stadium in the centre of Fremantle, Western Australia, located on Parry Street. It currently has a capacity of 17,500 with terracing and a members area holding 750, though capacity was capped at 10,000 for Fremantle AFLW games. Fremantle Oval was originally used for cricket, but in 1895 hosted its first game of Australian rules football and Australian Football quickly became the main attraction leading to the development of the ground. It is located between the Fremantle Hospital, Fremantle Markets and the Fremantle Prison. South Fremantle Football Club train and play their home WAFL matches at the ground and are one of the few sporting organisations in Western Australia to own their club rooms freehold, rather than on a long-term lease. Dennis Blair (footballer)
Dennis Blair (born 20 August 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. Blair holds a place in the history of the Subiaco Football Club as a member of their drought-breaking 1973 premiership team and Simpson Medal winner for his performance at centre half back. The Simpson Medal is an individual prize awarded for Australian rules football in Western Australia. The medal has been donated by Dr Fred Simpson and family since 1945. Peter Featherby
Peter Featherby (born 12 December 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer. He began his senior career with Subiaco Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), but he also played with two Victorian Football League (VFL) clubs. Featherby's first stint in the VFL was with the Footscray Football Club, where he lasted only two seasons before moving back to Subiaco. Geelong encouraged him to return to the VFL in 1979 he moved to the club and won the Carji Greeves Medal in 1981. A prolific ball-winner, he had the second highest confirmed possession game of all time, gathering 43 kicks, 8 handballs and 12 marks against Melbourne in round 16, 1981. Other unconfirmed reports say Featherby amassed 55 possessions for Footscray in 1975 and 56 against Fitzroy in 1983. Mel Whinnen
Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE (born 6 October 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Whinnen played 367 premiership games for West Perth, a WAFL record, playing in four premiership sides and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal on two occasions, as well as winning West Perth's best and fairest award, the Breckler Medal, on a record nine occasions. He was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Career Educated at North Perth Primary School and Perth Boys High School, Whinnen debuted for West Perth in 1960, and was a reserve in the club's 1960 premiership win over at Subiaco Oval. Bob Beecroft
Robert James Beecroft (born 11 January 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), Swan Districts Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) and the Woodville Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Beecroft made his debut with Swan Districts in 1970, playing 126 games as a ruckman, being named All Australian for his performance in the 1972 Perth Carnival and the Swan's Best and Fairest award. He played for Western Australia three years later and was recruited by Fitzroy for the following season. As a key forward for the Lions, Beecroft topped their goalkicking list four times with a best of 87 goals in 1979 which was at the time a club record. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. Bruce Duperouzel
Bruce Duperouzel (born 21 April 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer and cricketer. Duperouzel started his football career with Claremont in the WANFL, and later played for St Kilda and Footscray in the VFL. Duperouzel was born in Northam, Western Australia, and played 86 games as a rover at Claremont in five seasons, winning their 1971 fairest and best award. During the same period he represented WA in five first-class cricket matches. He joined St Kilda in 1974 and finished that season as their leading goalkicker with 28 goals. ''Losing Streak'' is the second studio album by ska punk band Less Than Jake, released on November 12, 1996 on Capitol Records. The album was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida and Mirror Image Studios in Gainesville, Florida, both with producer Michael Rosen. Leederville Oval
Leederville Oval (known as Medibank Stadium under a naming rights agreement between 2006 and 2016) is an Australian rules football ground located in Leederville, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The ground is used as a home ground by two clubs: the East Perth Football Club and the Subiaco Football Club, both competing in the West Australian Football League (WAFL).
