1972–73 Port Vale F.C. Season
The 1972–73 season was Port Vale's 61st season of football in the Football League, and their third successive season (ninth overall) in the Third Division. Their promotion efforts ended with a sixth-place finish, whilst in the two cup competitions they lost out to Newcastle United and West Ham United. Opposition managers condemned the players as overly physical, whilst off the pitch there were sporadic scenes of violence as football hooliganism gripped the club, and the sport in general. Overview Third Division The pre-season saw Gordon Lee make a number of big signings. The most significant was the signing of Ray Williams from Stafford Rangers, who had scored 47 goals for the non-league club the previous season. Stafford Rangers F
Stafford () is a market town and the county town of Staffordshire, in the West Midlands region of England. It lies about north of Wolverhampton, south of Stoke-on-Trent and northwest of Birmingham. The town had a population of 70,145 in the 2021 census, It is the main settlement within the larger borough of Stafford which had a population of 136,837 (2021). John James (footballer, Born 1948)
John Brian James (24 October 1948 – February 2021) was an English footballer who played as a striker. He played in the English Football League for Port Vale, Chester and Tranmere Rovers, making 381 appearances in the process, and also played in the North American Soccer League for the Chicago Sting. He won promotions out of the Fourth Division with Port Vale, Chester and Tranmere. Career Port Vale James began his career in his native Staffordshire with Port Vale, turning professional in April 1966. He made his senior debut on 12 April 1966, in a 3–0 win over Newport County at Vale Park. He would help the youth-team to reach the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 1966–67. Brian Horton
Brian "Nobby" Horton (born 4 February 1949) is an English former footballer and manager. He spent 16 years as a professional player and 22 years as a manager, making 689 appearances and managing 1,098 matches. In addition to this he spent four years as a semi-professional player and around 11 years as a coach and assistant manager. Horton played at wing-half, though was forced to find employment as a builder after being released from Walsall's youth-team in 1966. He joined Hednesford Town in the West Midlands (Regional) League, winning the Staffordshire Senior Cup in his final appearance for the club in 1970. The Millmoor Ground, commonly known as Millmoor, is a football stadium in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It was the home ground of Rotherham County F.C. between 1907 and 1925 and then its successor Rotherham United F.C. until 2008. The stadium has had no professional tenant since, but has been in use again for local youth football since 2016. It has been described as 'the spiritual home' of Rotherham United. Reginald Ernest Edwards (born 28 January 1953) is an English former football goalkeeper. He made his debut at the age of 17 for Nuneaton Borough in November 1970, and later played nine games in the Football League for Port Vale between 1972 and 1975. He then returned to non-league football with Brereton Social, Redditch United, Stafford Rangers and Alvechurch. Colin Tartt
Colin Tartt (born 23 November 1950) is an English former footballer. A midfielder, he made 478 league appearances in a 13-year career in the Football League. A qualified teacher, he began his career with Port Vale in 1972. He spent five years at the club, before being sold on to Chesterfield for £15,000 in March 1977. He helped the club to lift the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1981, before he returned to Port Vale for a £15,000 fee in November of that year. He spent four years with the "Valiants", helping the club to achieve promotion out of the Fourth Division in 1982–83. He later returned to teaching and played non-league football for Shepshed Charterhouse and Matlock Town.
