Len Thompson
Len Thompson (27 August 1947 – 18 September 2007) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Collingwood Football Club, South Melbourne Football Club and Fitzroy Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Collingwood He was recruited by Collingwood from North Reservoir after he had initially trained with, and had been rejected by Essendon. John Williams (born 17 July 1947) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon and Collingwood in the VFL. A defender, Williams played his best football in the early 1970s with Essendon. He finished second in the club's 1971 best and fairest awards and was equal third in the 1972 Brownlow Medal count. Neil Stanley "Stan" Alves, Order of Australia, OAM (born 22 May 1946) is a former Australian rules football player and coach. Playing career Melbourne Alves played 226 games and kicked a total of 160 goals for the Melbourne Football Club from 1965 until 1976. captaining them from 1973–1976 and finishing runner-up for the Brownlow Medal in 1975. North Melbourne Alves joined North Melbourne Football Club, North Melbourne in 1977. David Clarke (Australian Footballer, Born 1952)
David E. Clarke (born 31 December 1952) is a former Australian rules footballer with the Geelong Football Club. Better known as a half-forward flanker he also played in the centre and centre half-back. He won the club Best and Fairest three times and was runner-up four times. Clarke was a director of the failed Geelong based Pyramid Building Society, which collapsed in 1990 with debts of A$2 billion. Gary Dempsey (Australian Footballer)
Gary Dempsey (born 22 November 1948) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Footscray Football Club and North Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A fine ruckman known for his strong marking, Dempsey won the Brownlow Medal in 1975 and had a total of thirteen top-10 finishes in the vote count. He is also one of a handful of players to have played at least 100 games and won a best-and-fairest award at two different clubs. Playing career Dempsey made his debut for Footscray in 1967. In 1969, he spent six weeks in hospital after being badly burnt by a bushfire near his home in Truganina and was told he would never play football again. John Greening
John Greening (born 25 December 1950 in Burnie) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood in the VFL. Greening attended Montello Primary School and Parklands High as he grew up in the industrial town of Burnie in northern Tasmania. Recruited by Collingwood Football Club, Greening moved to Victoria in 1967 aged 16, and attended Northcote High School. He made his senior debut for the club the following year in a game against Hawthorn and became a regular in the side, playing as a ruck rover, half forward, centreman and wingman. He played 94 consecutive games with the club until a major injury on 8 July 1972 during a game against St Kilda. His next game with Collingwood was to be two years later, a match against Richmond. John Murphy (born 20 November 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (now AFL). Playing career Murphy debuted with the Fitzroy Football Club in 1967 after being recruited from Diamond Valley Football League club Heidelberg, and went on to set the record for consecutive games played from debut -158 matches. This record held until 2005 when surpassed by Jared Crouch from Sydney. Gary Hardeman
Gary Hardeman (born 26 February 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between the late 1960s and early 1980s. Hardeman played as a half back and made his senior debut for Melbourne in the 1967 VFL season. He remained with the club until 1977, finishing second in the 1974 Brownlow Medal count and earning All Australian selection for his performance in the 1972 Perth Carnival. After leaving the club at the end of 1977 Hardeman joined Sturt in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) but returned to Melbourne in 1981 to play for one final season. Greg Wells (born 6 June 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s and early 1980s. Wells usually played as a centreman or rover. During the 1969 season Wells played in the thirds, seconds and senior Melbourne sides in successive weeks.. 1972 VFL Season
The 1972 VFL season was the 76th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 1 April until 7 October, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs – an increase from the four clubs which had contested the finals in previous years. The premiership was won by the Carlton Football Club for the eleventh time, after it defeated by 27 points in the 1972 VFL Grand Final.
