Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships
The Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships are the world championships for the sport of rhythmic gymnastics. The tournament is promoted and organized by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). It is one of the three tournaments in rhythmic gymnastics officially organized by FIG, as well as the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup and the gymnastics competitions at the Olympic Games (in collaboration with the IOC and the federation of the country organising the Games). The first edition of the World Championships was held in 1963, a time when the sport was known as modern gymnastics. The current program of the World Championships contemplates both individual and group performances. In even non-Olympic years and the year before the Olympics, a team event is also contested. Galima Akhmetkareevna Shugurova (russian: Галима Ахметкареевна Шугурова; Tatar: Галима Әхмәтгәрәй кызы Шөгурова; born 8 November 1953 in Omsk) is a retired rhythmic gymnast who competed for the Soviet Union. She is the 1973 World All-around champion and two time (1969, 1977) World All-around silver medalist. She is the first All-around winner of the European Championships. Personal life Shugurova was born to a Siberian Tatar family in the city of Omsk, in western Siberia. She studied history at the Omsk Pedagogical Institute. Shugurova graduated from the Omsk Institute of Physical Training in 1975. Career Shugurova was introduced to rhythmic gymnastics when she was eight years old. Initially, she was more attracted to figure skating and choreography classes. Neshka Robeva
Neshka Stefanova Robeva ( bg, Нешка Стефанова Робева; born 26 May 1946) is a Bulgarian former Rhythmic Gymnast and coach. Biography Born in Rousse, Robeva graduated from the Bulgarian State Choreography School in "Bulgarian Dances" in 1966 and since then had been a member of the Bulgarian national rhythmic gymnastics squad until 1973. She took part in four World Championships. (1967, 1969, 1971, 1973) In 1974 Robeva graduated from the High Institute for Sports (now National Sports Academy) and started work as a coach at the "Levski-Spartak" club. The same year she was appointed head coach of the Bulgarian National Team and she remained in that position until 1999. This was a very successful period for Bulgarian rhythmic gymnastics. Maria Gigova ( bg, Мария Гигова; born 24 April 1947) is a Bulgarian rhythmic gymnast. She is a three-time (1969, 1971, 1973) World All-around champion. Biography She was the first gymnast to become a triple world champion in rhythmic gymnastics with her titles in 1969, 1971, and 1973. Gigova has a total of four gold medals in hoop (1967, 1969, 1971 and 1973), an achievement still unmatched by any other gymnast, as well as one title in rope (1971) and free exercise (1969). As a member of the Bulgarian Team, she also earned team titles at the rhythmic gymnastics world championships in 1969 and 1971. Krassimira Filipova
Krassimira Filipova (born 2 February 1949) is a former Bulgarian rhythmic gymnast. She was a leading athlete in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s. Career In 1967 she was at the World Championships held in Copenhagen where she obtained a bronze medal in the free hands final and was 7th in the individual All-Around event. In 1971, at the World Championships in Havana, she won the silver medal with hoop, the bronze with rope, and was 4th place in the individual All-Around competition and in the ribbon final. In the World Championships in Rotterdam in 1973, she was again 4th in the All-Around competition and won the silver medal in the hoop final; she in addition to 5th place with ball and 6th with rope.
