1971 French Open – Women's Singles
Evonne Goolagong defeated Helen Gourlay in the final, 6–3, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1971 French Open. It was her first major title. Margaret Court was the two-time defending champion, but was defeated in the third round by Gail Chanfreau. This marked the first time since the 1964 US Chamionships that Court failed to reach a major quarterfinal, a run of 19 consecutive majors. Evonne Goolagong Cawley
Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley (née Goolagong; born 31 July 1951) is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. Goolagong was one of the world's leading players in the 1970s and early 1980s. At the age of 19, she won the French Open singles and the Australian Open doubles championships (the latter with Margaret Court). She won the women's singles tournament at Wimbledon in 1971. In 1980, she became the first mother to win Wimbledon for 66 years. Goolagong went on to win 14 Grand Slam tournament titles: seven in singles (four at the Australian Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the French Open), six in women's doubles, and one in mixed doubles. She represented Australia in three Fed Cup competitions, winning the title in 1971, 1973 and 1974, and was Fed Cup captain for three consecutive years. Marijke Schaar
Marijke Schaar (born 12 November 1944), also known under her maiden name Marijke Jansen, is a former Dutch female tennis player who was active during the 1960s and 1970s. She reached a highest singles ranking of world number 21 in 1971. She had her most successful year in 1971 when she reached the semifinal of the singles event at the French Open, losing to eventual champion Evonne Goolagong, and the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships. Nathalie Fuchs
Nathalie Fuchs (born 3 September 1952) is a French former professional tennis player. A right-handed player from Paris, Fuchs competed on the professional tour in the 1970s. She was the winner of the 1974 Spanish Championships and played 11 ties for the France Federation Cup team. Fuchs made the third round of the French Open on three occasions, including in 1974 when she had an upset win over second seed Virginia Wade. She also partnered with Wanaro N'Godrella in the mixed doubles event in 1974 and reached the semi-finals, which was her best grand slam performance. In the 1975 Federation Cup she remained unbeaten in her singles rubbers up until France's semi-final loss to Czechoslovakia. She had played an important role in the quarter-final win over Great Britain, with her victory against Sue Barker levelling the tie, which was won by France in the doubles. Pam Teeguarden (born April 17, 1951) is a former American professional tennis player in the 1970s and 1980s, ranked in the top 20 from 1970–1975. She won two Grand Slam Doubles Titles and was a quarter finalist in singles at the U.S. Open and The French Open. Her father Jerry, a well known coach, helped Margaret Court win the coveted Grand Slam (all four Grand Slam titles in one year) in 1970 and Virginia Wade to her 1977 Wimbledon triumph. Teeguarden was voted the "Most Watchable Player" based on play and appearance by a group of Madison Avenue advertising executives or "Mad Men" while playing at the US Open.
