1970 North American Soccer League Season
Statistics of North American Soccer League in season 1970. This was the 3rd season of the NASL. Overview Six teams competed with the Rochester Lancers winning the championship. Santos FC of Brazil beat the NASL All-Stars 4–3 at Soldier Field in Chicago to finish the season. In 1970, NASL teams rounded out their schedules by playing an assortment of foreign clubs including Hapoel Petah Tikva, Varzim, Hertha Berlin and Coventry City. These games weren't just for attendance but also counted in the standings. The Washington Darts went 2-2-0 versus the international teams earning the "International Cup". Lincoln Phillips
Lincoln Phillips (born 4 July 1941) is a Trinidad and Tobago former footballer and soccer coach. He became the first black professional soccer coach in U.S. history in 1968 when he became the player/coach of the Washington Darts and he coached Howard University to two undefeated seasons and NCAA Championships. Phillips was a goalkeeper for Trinidad and Tobago's national team from 1963 to 1967, and with them won a bronze medal in the 1967 Pan American Games. He moved into American professional soccer, ending up with the Darts in 1969. That year he was the ASL's Coach of the Year and made the All-Star Team, while leading the team to the ASL Championship. In 1970, the team moved to the NASL and he was the league's top goalkeeper, setting NASL records for consecutive shutouts and consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, and made the All-Star Team again. Billy Fraser
William Thomas Fraser (born 12 August 1945) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as an outside left for Huddersfield Town in the English Football League and for Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Football League. He then moved to the United States, where he played in the North American Soccer League for the Boston Beacons, the Washington Darts and the Miami Gatos. Roy Turner (soccer)
Roy Turner (born March 30, 1943 in Liverpool, England) is a former English American soccer player who spent one season in the National Professional Soccer League, eleven in the North American Soccer League. He then went on to manage the Wichita Wings of Major Indoor Soccer League for eight seasons. He also earned two caps with the U.S. national team. Playing Professional Turner moved to the United States in 1967 to play for the Toronto Falcons of the National Professional Soccer League. He was traded to the Philadelphia Spartans eighteen games into the season. Following the 1967 season, the NPSL merged with the United Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League. Turner then signed with the Cleveland Stokers of the NASL. He played in all games but 3. The Stokers were eventually beaten in the Conference Championship by Atlanta in sudden death over time. John Best (soccer)
John Best (11 July 1940 – 5 October 2014) was an American international soccer defender. He spent six seasons in the North American Soccer League where he was a five-time first team All Star. He later coached the NASL Seattle Sounders and served as the general manager of the Sounders and the Vancouver Whitecaps. He also earned one cap with the U.S. national team in 1973. Playing Best began his career in England. He played for Liverpool in 1959 under the new manager, Bill Shankly, after which he played seven games with Tranmere Rovers in 1960. In 1967, he moved to the United States where he signed with the Philadelphia Spartans of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL). In 1968, the NPSL merged with the United Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League. When the Spartans folded, Best and several of his teammates, transferred to the Cleveland Stokers for the 1969 NASL season. Ray Bloomfield
Raymond George Bloomfield (born 15 October 1944 in Kensington, London) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League as a winger for Aston Villa, in the National Professional Soccer League for the Atlanta Chiefs, and in the North American Soccer League for Atlanta and the Dallas Tornado. He is the nephew of footballer and manager Jimmy Bloomfield. Career As a young player he represented England at schoolboy level, where he played alongside David Pleat, Barry Fry and Ron Harris, and at youth level. Bloomfield signed for Arsenal as an apprentice in 1960 and appeared in the youth and reserve set up, but was never selected for a senior competitive match. Midfielder
A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders. Willie Evans (21 November 1939 – c. 2014) was a Ghanaian footballer who played at both professional and international levels as a defender. Career Professional Evans played professional soccer in the United States, competing in the NPSL, NASL and ASL for the Atlanta Chiefs, the Washington Darts, and the Miami Toros. He was named to the 1969 ASL All-Star Team.
