1970 Dominican Republic Census
The Fifth National Census of Population of the Dominican Republic was taken in 9-10 January 1970, during the presidency of Joaquín Balaguer. This census collected information aspects of sex, occupation, age, fertility, religion, marital status, nationality, literacy, ability to vote and housing. Unlike all previous censuses, no information regarding race was collected. This census was made over two days instead of one. Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic ( ; es, República Dominicana, ) is a country located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean region. It occupies the eastern five-eighths of the island, which it shares with Haiti, making Hispaniola one of only two Caribbean islands, along with Saint Martin, that is shared by two sovereign states. The Dominican Republic is the second-largest nation in the Antilles by area (after Cuba) at , and third-largest by population, with approximately 10.7 million people (2022 est.), down from 10.8 million in 2020, of whom approximately 3.3 million live in the metropolitan area of Santo Domingo, the capital city. Joaquín Balaguer
Joaquín Antonio Balaguer Ricardo (1 September 1906 – 14 July 2002) was a Dominican politician, scholar, writer, and lawyer. He was President of the Dominican Republic serving three non-consecutive terms for that office from 1960 to 1962, 1966 to 1978, and 1986 to 1996. His enigmatic, secretive personality was inherited from the Trujillo era, as well as his desire to perpetuate himself in power through dubious elections and state terrorism, and he was considered to be a ''caudillo''. His regime of terror claimed 11,000 victims who were either tortured or forcibly disappeared and killed. Nevertheless, Balaguer was also considered to be instrumental in the liberalization of the Dominican government, and his time as leader of the Dominican Republic saw major changes such as legalized political activities, surprise army promotions and demotions, promoting health and education improvements and instituting modest land reforms. Cibao
The Cibao, usually referred as "El Cibao", is a region of the Dominican Republic located at the northern part of the country. As of 2009 the Cibao has a population of 5,622,378 making it the most populous region in the country. The region constitutes a "developed macro-region"; with a large industrial base and high levels of progress among its inhabitants, it has the highest levels of education and the highest quality of life among the three main regions of the Dominican Republic. Cibao is social-culturally characterized by the overwhelming predominance of the European legacy in the island, and economically for being the most prosperous region in the country. 1920 Santo Domingo Census
The 1920 Santo Domingo Census was conducted from 19 January to 24 December 1920, during the administration of the general Thomas Snowden, American governor of the Santo Domingo following the American occupation of the Dominican Republic. This was the first census done in the land of the former Dominican Republic since the Spanish colonial period, although the Catholic Church had done several parish censuses; the 1920 census collected information regarding on sex, age, fertility, race, religion, marital status, nationality, and housing. 2022 Dominican Republic Census
The 2022 Dominican Republic census is the tenth Dominican Republic national census, and was held from the 10 to 23 of November 2022, during the presidency of Luis Abinader. It was originally scheduled to conclude in 23 November, but, it was extended to the end of month due to work delays. The population of the Dominican Republic was counted as 10,760,025 – an increase of 1,314,747 (13.9%) over the 2010 census. First results from the 2022 census were released to the public on 10 August 2023, from the Oficina Nacional de Estadística website. Preparation As required by law, the Dominican Republic census has been conducted every 10 years since 1920. The 2010 Dominican Republic census was the previous census completed. Censuses In The Dominican Republic
A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring, recording and calculating information about the members of a given population. This term is used mostly in connection with national population and housing censuses; other common censuses include censuses of agriculture, traditional culture, business, supplies, and traffic censuses. The United Nations (UN) defines the essential features of population and housing censuses as "individual enumeration, universality within a defined territory, simultaneity and defined periodicity", and recommends that population censuses be taken at least every ten years.
