1969 WANFL Season
The 1969 WANFL season was the 85th season of the Western Australian National Football League. Leederville Oval
Leederville Oval (known as Medibank Stadium under a naming rights agreement between 2006 and 2016) is an Australian rules football ground located in Leederville, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia. The ground is used as a home ground by two clubs: the East Perth Football Club and the Subiaco Football Club, both competing in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). The ground was previously home to the West Perth Football Club from 1915 to 1993, before the club moved to Arena Joondalup, its current home ground. The ground is serviced by the Joondalup railway line, with the nearest stop being the Leederville station. Peter Manning (footballer)
Peter John Manning (born 17 May 1946) is a former Australian rules footballer who was highly successful in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) playing for the Swan Districts Football Club. Beginning his career in 1944, he was unlucky in missing the dominant period of Swan Districts but did play in the 1965 Grand Final that the Swans lost to East Fremantle. A skillful and hard running wingman or centreman, Manning played the majority of his career in these positions. Tony Nesbit
Anthony David "Tony" Nesbit (26 April 1938 – 6 May 1996) was an Australian rules footballer who was highly successful in the West Australian National Football League (WANFL) playing for the Swan Districts Football Club. Originally playing in the seconds for Swan Districts, his long career began at the club in 1954 along with Keith Slater. A lightly built player he started on the wing but developed later into a ruck rover. In his debut season in the league competition, 1958, Nesbit won the "Rookie of the Year" award. After having been the chopping block of Western Australian football between 1946 and 1960, Swan Districts entered a period of unprecedented success during the early sixties, which Nesbit was a part of. Nesbit played in the back pocket of all three premiership sides, and was co-captain of Swan Districts in 1965 and 1966. Mel Whinnen
Allan Melvyn "Mel" Whinnen MBE (born 6 October 1942) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Perth Football Club in the Western Australian National Football League (WANFL) from 1960 to 1977. Whinnen played 367 premiership games for West Perth, a WAFL record, playing in four premiership sides and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal on two occasions, as well as winning West Perth's best and fairest award, the Breckler Medal, on a record nine occasions. He was inducted into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Career Educated at North Perth Primary School and Perth Boys High School, Whinnen debuted for West Perth in 1960, and was a reserve in the club's 1960 premiership win over at Subiaco Oval. Ian Miller (Australian Footballer)
Ian Miller (born 16 December 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy in the VFL and with Perth and East Perth in the WANFL and appeared in 15 interstate matches for Western Australia. Following the footsteps of his father Bob Miller who 172 games for Perth, Miller was a versatile player and was often used across half forward and as a ruck-rover. He started his career at WANFL club Perth and was a member of their 1968 premiership side. In 1972 he spent more of the season at centre half-forward and won a Sandover Medal. He also represented Western Australia that year at the Perth Carnival and earned All-Australian selection. The following season he played the last of his 132 games for Perth and was recruited by Fitzroy. From 1974 to 1977 he was a regular in the Fitzroy side before returning to the West in 1978 to join East Perth. 1969 Adelaide Carnival
The 1969 Adelaide Carnival was the 17th edition of the Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition. Four teams competed in the carnival, South Australia, the Victorian Football League, Tasmania and Western Australia. Victoria finished on top of the table after winning all of their games. Peter Hudson kicked 17 goals in the carnival, the next best was Austin Robertson with 15. The Victorian Football Association was scheduled to have competed in the Carnival, but was disqualified after it allowed players to cross from the VFL to the VFA without formal clearances during the 1969 season, in defiance of an ANFC directive from the previous year. Keith Doncon
Keith Doncon (born 11 July 1944) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for East Perth in the WANFL during the 1960s. Doncon first played with East Perth in 1963 after having played his early football at Scotch CollegeDevaney, John; ''Full Points Footy’s WA Football Companion'', p. 63 but returned to his country home the following season due to homesickness. Brian Roberts (Australian Rules Footballer)
Brian Stuart Roberts (28 April 1945 – 6 August 2016) was an Australian rules football player who played in the VFL between 1971 and 1975 for the Richmond Football Club (as well as a short stint with South Melbourne in 1975). Roberts was known as "The Whale" due to his enormous stature and played as a ruckman. He was the only player to have represented all three States, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. Early life Roberts was born in the UK, and with his family emigrated to Millicent. In his late teens the 199 cm ruckman was attracting interest from VFL clubs but new South Adelaide coach Neil Kerley, persuaded Roberts to join the Club. Derek Chadwick
Derek Chadwick (born 21 March 1941) is an Australian former sportsman, playing both first-class cricket with Western Australia and Australian rules football for East Perth in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL). Chadwick was a right-handed opening batsman who made 4082 runs at 34.30 during his cricketing career, with 9 centuries. He toured New Zealand with the Australian team in 1969-70. Fremantle Oval
Fremantle Oval, also known by naming rights sponsorship as Fremantle Community Bank Oval, is a stadium in the centre of Fremantle, Western Australia, located on Parry Street. It currently has a capacity of 17,500 with terracing and a members area holding 750, though capacity was capped at 10,000 for Fremantle AFLW games. Fremantle Oval was originally used for cricket, but in 1895 hosted its first game of Australian rules football and Australian Football quickly became the main attraction leading to the development of the ground. It is located between the Fremantle Hospital, Fremantle Markets and the Fremantle Prison. South Fremantle Football Club train and play their home WAFL matches at the ground and are one of the few sporting organisations in Western Australia to own their club rooms freehold, rather than on a long-term lease.
