1969 German Open Championships
The 1969 German Open Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament played on outdoor red clay courts. It was the 61st edition of the tournament, the second one in the Open Era, and the first edition to offer official prize money. The event took place at the Am Rothenbaum in Hamburg, West Germany, from 5 August through 11 August 1969. First-seeded Tony Roche and Judy Tegart won the singles titles. Tegart also won the doubles (with Helga Niessen) and mixed doubles (with Marty Riessen) titles. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Hamburg European Open
The Hamburg European Open (formerly ''German Open Tennis Championships'') is an annual tennis tournament for professional players held in Hamburg, Germany and part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. Before 2021, it was a male-only event. The tournament is played on outdoor clay courts at the tennis center ''Am Rothenbaum'' in the Harvestehude quarter. For much of its history, the tournament was contested in May, as a precursor to the French Open on the professional tennis calendar. Starting with the 2009 tournament, it has been held in July instead. The women's event was held initially separately from 1982 to 1983 (in Hittfeld), and again from 1987 through to 2002. Frew McMillan
Frew Donald McMillan (born 20 May 1942) is a former professional male tennis player from South Africa who won five grand slam doubles titles including three Wimbledons with Bob Hewitt. All together, he won 63 doubles titles, surpassed only by the Bryan brothers, Mark Woodforde, Todd Woodbridge, John McEnroe and Tom Okker. He was also ranked No.1 in Doubles on the ATP Computer for a significant period from 1977 to 1979 when he was aged 37. Biography McMillan was born in Springs, South Africa. Patricia Molly "Pat" Walkden-Pretorius (born 12 February 1946) is a former female tennis player from Rhodesia and South Africa. Walkden was a runner-up in the 1967 French Championships doubles, partnering compatriot Annette du Plooy. They lost the final in straight sets to Françoise Dürr and Gail Sherriff. Helga Schultze
Helga Schultze (2 February 1940 – 12 September 2015), also known by her married name Helga Hösl, was a German female tennis player who reached a singles ranking of No. 5 in 1964. Schultze was born in Berlin on 2 February 1940, and after World War II, she moved with her family to Hanau, where she played for the local club THC Hanau. Between 1961 and 1968 she competed in seven Wimbledon Championships. She achieved her best singles result at Wimbledon in 1962 when she reached the fourth round, losing to second-seeded Darlene Hard. She reached the semifinals at the 1964 French Championships where she lost in three sets to top-seeded and eventual champion Margaret Smith. Edda Buding
Edda Buding (13 November 1936 – 15 July 2014) was a German tennis player of Romanian birth. She received the doubles gold medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics doubles demonstration event partnered with Helga Niessen Masthoff. Along with Yola RamÃrez Ochoa, she was the runner-up in the 1961 U.S. Championships women's doubles event and with Robert Howe was the runner-up in mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 1961. She was the sister of Ingo Buding, a two-time junior singles champion at the French Championships, and Ilse Buding. She won the 1961 U.S. Women's Clay Court Championships singles title after a three-sets victory in the final against Karen Hantze. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court.
