The 1969 Australian Formula 2 Championship was a CAMS sanctioned Australian motor racing title open to racing cars complying with Australian Formula 2. The title, which was the third Australian Formula 2 Championship,Records, Titles and Awards, 2006 CAMS Manual of Motor Sport, page 14-6 was contested concurrently with the 1969 Sam Hordern Memorial Trophy which was staged at Warwick Farm in New South Wales, Australia on 7 December 1969.David McKay, ho hum hordern, Modern Motor, February 1970, pages 93 & 95 The championship was won by Max Stewart driving a Mildren Waggott. Warwick Farm Raceway
Warwick Farm Raceway was a motor racing facility which was in operation from 1960 to 1973. Warwick Farm Raceway hosted numerous major events during its life such as the Australian Grand Prix and rounds of both the Australian Touring Car Championship and the Tasman Series. History Warwick Farm Raceway was built in 1960 on the site of the Warwick Farm Racecourse, a horse racing track with which it was to co-exist throughout its history. When a motor racing meeting was scheduled, two "crossings" had to be placed over the top of the horse racing track, and then removed after racing had finished. It became one of Australia's premier motor racing venues and gained a reputation as a "drivers' track", hosting the Australian Grand Prix and rounds of both the Tasman Series and the Australian Drivers' Championship. Alec Mildren Racing
Alec Mildren (1915–1998) was active in Australian motor racing as a driver from 1938 to 1961, and subsequently as the owner of Alec Mildren Racing. Racing career Mildren began his racing career in an Austin in 1938Mike Kable, ''Alec Mildren wins CAMS 1960 Gold Star award'', The Sydney Morning Herald, Monday, 14 November 1960, page 17 and then raced a variety of cars including a Singer, a Ford Special, an MG TB and two Rileys. These were followed by a series of Coopers, with Mildren placing second in both the 1958 and 1959 Australian Drivers' Championships. Australian National Formula
The Australian National Formula (often abbreviated to ANF) was an Australian motor racing category which was introduced by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport in 1964 and remained current until the end of 1969. It had replaced Formula Libre as the Australian premier racing formula. The Australian National Formula specified single seat racing cars fitted with unsupercharged engines of no greater than 2.5 litres capacity running on commercially available fuel. This encouraged the use of engines such as the Coventry Climax FPF unit which had been prominent in the 2.5 litre FIA Formula One category prior to the downsizing of that formula for 1961. The Australian National Formula was renamed for 1970, officially becoming Australian Formula 1 (AF1). Bowin P3
The Bowin P3 is a monocoque racing car that was produced in 1968 by Bowin. The P3 was designed for the Australian National Formula and the Australian 1½ Litre Formula. After the capacity limit for Australian Formula 2 was increased from 1100cc to 1600cc at the beginning of 1969, the P3 found a new home in that class. The car was designed by John Joyce, founder of Bowin and assisted by Ray Parson, better known as a mechanic. This was the only Bowin car type to come out of the Joyce-Parsons association. McLaren M4A
The McLaren M4A was an open-wheel racing car designed by Robin Herd and built by British Formula One team McLaren to compete in the European Formula Two Championship. The M4A made its début in the 1967 European F2 Championship, and was powered by Ford Cosworth FVA engines. Two works cars were initially produced for use in the championship. Although the car was reasonably competitive in the series, it was not able to challenge the more capable Brabham BT23 or Lotus 48. Graeme Lawrence recalled that he and Frank Gardner, who both drove the car in the 1968 season, struggled to handle the M4A and that McLaren's focus was firmly on Formula One at the time, which explained why little development was done to the car from the 1967 version and teams were not offered much technical support.
