Elections for a Legislative Assembly were held in Nauru on 26 January 1968.Nancy Viviani (1970) ''Nauru: Phosphate and Political Progress'' Australian National University Press, p176 Background A Constitutional Convention had been elected in 1967. It produced a new constitution in preparation for independence, which provided for an 18-member Legislative Assembly with a three-year term. The Assembly would then appoint a five-member Council of State to exercise executive power. Results Of the 18 elected members, half consisted of the nine members of the Legislative Council elected in 1966. Aftermath The Assembly met for the first time on 31 January and elected the new five-member Council of State. Seven candidates were nominated for the contest, although Victor Eoaeo pulled out as he continued to oppose Nauruan independence. The Council subsequently elected Hammer DeRoburt as its chairman. Nauru
Nauru ( or ; na, Naoero), officially the Republic of Nauru ( na, Repubrikin Naoero) and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country and microstate in Oceania, in the Central Pacific. Austin Bernicke
Austin Bernicke (died 13 January 1977) was a Nauruan politician. He was a member of the first Local Government Council in 1951, then a member of Parliament after it was established in 1966, serving until his death in 1977. He also served as a cabinet minister from 1968 until 1976. Biography Bernicke was a member of the Eamwitmwit tribe. He became the first Nauruan to attend university when he began studying medicine at Queen's College at the University of Melbourne. He returned to Nauru to work as a pathologist, later becoming superintendent of Nauru Hospital. Samuel Tsitsi
Samuel Edwin Tsitsi (17 January 192520 May 1997) was a Nauruan politician. Biography Tsitsi was born on 17 January 1925. His father was Samuel Tsitsi. He was member of the Eamwidara tribe. In 1939, he entered the medical service as an apprentice in a pharmacy in Sydney, Australia. In 1954, again in Sydney, he trained to become a pharmacist. In December 1964, there was a by-election to fill a vacancy in the Nauruan Local Government Council caused by the death of Councillor Raymond Gadabu. In the four-way election, Tsitsi was elected. In 1966, Tsitsi was elected to the Legislative Assembly and re-elected to the Local Government Council. He represented the Aiwo district in both. James Ategan Bop
James Ategan Bop (died 12 July 1984) was a Nauruan politician. He served as a member of Parliament and its predecessors from 1951 to 1955 and then from 1959 until his death, and was Minister of Finance for most of the period between 1968 and 1978. Biography Bop was a member of the Iruwa tribe. He was educated at Geelong in Australia. Following World War II he returned to Nauru and was employed by the Nauru Co-operative Society. Buraro Robidok Bagewa Detudamo (1931 – 5 June 1994) was a Nauruan politician. He was the only son of Timothy Detudamo and brother-in-law to Kennan Adeang.
