1968 Copa Interamericana
The 1968 Copa Interamericana was the 1st. edition of the Copa Interamericana. The final was contested by Argentine club Estudiantes de la Plata (champion of 1968 Copa Libertadores) and Mexican side Deportivo Toluca (winner of 1968 CONCACAF Champions' Cup). The final was played under a two-leg format in February 1969. In the first leg, hosted at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Estudiantes beat Toluca 2–1. In the second leg at Estudiantes Stadium in La Plata, Toluca was the winner by the same score. Copa Interamericana
The Copa Interamericana ( en, Interamerican Cup) was an annual club football competition contested between a representative from North America (CONCACAF) and South America (CONMEBOL). Established in 1969, it was discontinued in 1998 after CONCACAF clubs, particularly those from Mexico, began participating in CONMEBOL competitions. The competition was intended to be contested between the winners of the North American CONCACAF Champions Cup and the South American Copa Libertadores tournaments, although the participants varied at times. The competition was usually contested over a two legged tie, with a playoff or penalty kicks if necessary. However, it was common for several consecutive editions to go unheld. Osvaldo Juan Zubeldía (24 June 1927 in Junín – 17 January 1982 in Medellín) was a football player and an influential Argentine coach. Playing career Zubeldía had a respectable playing career with Vélez Sársfield, Boca Juniors, Atlanta and Banfield and the Argentina national football team. Juan Ramón Verón
Juan Ramón Verón (; born 17 March 1944) is an Argentine football coach and former professional player. He played as a midfielder or forward most notably for Estudiantes, where he won three consecutive Copa Libertadores titles. He is the father of former player Juan Sebastián Verón. Career Estudiantes Nicknamed ''La Bruja'' ( en, The Witch), Juan Ramón Verón was born in La Plata. He was capable of playing both as a midfielder and as a striker, and was renowned for his technical skills, ability with the ball at his feet and his goal-scoring prowess. Marcos Conigliaro
Marcos Norberto Conigliaro (born December 9, 1942) is an Argentine football coach and former professional player. Biography Conigliaro was born in Quilmes. As a player, he was a forward renowned for his technical ability. He played for many clubs in Argentina and abroad. His debut in Argentina was with Quilmes at the age of 15. He then played for Independiente, Chacarita Juniors, Estudiantes, Jalisco, K.S.V. Oudenaarde, Lugano, and Everton. In 1965, he arrived to Estudiantes de La Plata, who were a dominant force in Argentine and South American football during the late 1960s. During his time in Estudiantes, Conigliaro won three Copa Libertadores and the 1968 Intercontinental Cup. Eduardo Flores
Eduardo Raúl Flores (23 April 1944 – 20 January 2022) was an Argentine footballer who played as a striker for Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina and AS Nancy in France. Career Flores started his playing career in 1962 with Estudiantes de La Plata, he went on to make 165 league appearances for the club scoring 65 goals. He was part of Osvaldo Zubeldía's team that won the 1967 Metropolitano championship, followed by three successive Copa Libertadores titles from 1968 to 1970. Flores missed the 1968 Copa Intercontinental championship win against Manchester United (of the Premier League), but played on the losing side against AC Milan in the 1969 edition and Feyenoord in 1970. Carlos Pachamé
Carlos Oscar Pachamé (born 25 February 1944) is an Argentina, Argentine former Association football, football player and coach, who played as a midfielder. Playing career As a player, Pachamé was a defensive midfielder for the Estudiantes de La Plata team that won three successive editions of the Copa Libertadores from 1968 to 1970, and the 1968 Copa Intercontinental. Carlos Bilardo
Carlos Salvador Bilardo Digiano (born 16 March 1938) is an Argentine former physician, football player, and manager. Bilardo achieved worldwide renown as a player with Estudiantes de La Plata in the 1960s, and as the manager of the Argentina side that won the 1986 FIFA World Cup and came close to retaining the title in 1990, where they reached the final. As manager of Argentina, he was renowned for successfully employing the 3–5–2 formation at the highest level; this formation has been in use for decades, but has never achieved mainstream status. Oscar Miguel ''Cacho'' Malbernat Candela (2 February 1944 – 9 August 2019) was an Argentine footballer, who was the captain of Estudiantes de La Plata between 1967 and 1972, when the team won a local championship in 1967, three consecutive Copa Libertadores titles (1968 to 1970) and one Intercontinental Cup (1968), where he marked Manchester United's George Best. During one of the 1970 Intercontinental Cup games, he ripped off Joop van Daele's glasses and trampled on them claiming that he was "not allowed to play with glasses". Before his retirement, he played for Boca Juniors in 1972 and Racing Club de Avellaneda in 1973. Raúl Madero
Raúl Horacio Madero (21 May 1939 – 24 December 2021) was an Argentine sports physician and football player. He served two terms as the physician of the Argentina national football team. Sporting career As a teenager, Madero was drawn initially to basketball, but decided on football when it became clear he had the talent to make it in the professional league. He played for Boca Juniors and Huracán but he came into his own with the Estudiantes de La Plata team that won several national and international titles between 1967 and 1970. Ramón Alberto Aguirre Suárez (18 October 1944 – 29 May 2013) was an Argentine footballer who played as a defender. He was mainly known for being a part of the successful Estudiantes de La Plata team of 1967–1970. Career Aguirre Suárez made his name in Osvaldo Zubeldía's Estudiantes as an often violent full-back, playing alongside the more refined Raúl Madero. When Estudiantes conquered the 1967 ''Metropolitano'' title and was runner-up in the ''Nacional'' of the same year, it qualified for the 1968 Copa Libertadores, which it won.
