1967 Basketball World Cup
The 1967 FIBA World Championship was the 5th FIBA World Championship, the international basketball world championship for men's teams. It was hosted by Montevideo, Uruguay from 27 May to 11 June 1967. Venues Competing nations Competition format * Preliminary round: Three groups of four teams play each other once; top two teams progress to the final round, bottom two teams relegated to classification round. * Classification round: All bottom two teams from preliminary round group play each other once. The team with the best record is ranked eighth; the worst is ranked 13th. * Final round: All top two teams from preliminary round group, the 1964 Olympic champion, and the host team play each other once. Óscar Diego Gestido
Óscar Diego Gestido Pose (Montevideo, Uruguay November 28, 1901 – Montevideo, December 6, 1967) was president of Uruguay in 1967. Biography Diego Gestido was from a military background, and served in the military for 36 years before retiring with the rank of general in 1957. Afterwards he had an important participation during the Uruguayan floods of April 1959, being considered a hero. He was also a member of the Colorado Party. President of Uruguay On 27 November 1966 elections were celebrated, together with a constitutional referendum which gave place to a new Constitution restoring one-person presidency. Diego Gestido was elected President of Uruguay, a post he held from March 1, 1967, to December 6, 1967. Cilindro Municipal
Cilindro Municipal (The Municipal Cylinder) was an indoor arena in Montevideo, Uruguay, which was opened in 1956, for Uruguay's Industrial Exhibition of the Production of international character. The arena was used as the main venue of the 1967 edition of the FIBA World Cup, for which it had a seating capacity of 18,000 spectators. History Over the years, many artists performed at the arena, including Bob Dylan, The Mission, UB40, Van Halen, and Molotov. On October 8, 2001, Eric Clapton performed at the arena, during his Reptile World Tour, and drew a crowd of 18,000 fans. Fire damage and demolishing On 21 October 2010, the Cilindro Municipal's roof fell down atop the inside structure because of a fire, the source of which is unknown. Arturo Guerrero
Arturo Guerrero Moreno (born 30 August 1948) is a Mexican former basketball player and coach. With Mexico's senior national team, he played at two Summer Olympic Games (1968 and 1976). Due to his shooting ability, he was nicknamed "Mano Santa" ("Holy Hand"). Along with Carlos Quintanar and Manolo Raga, he is generally considered to be one of the two best Mexican basketball players of all time. Club playing career Guerrero played club basketball in Mexico, Italy, with the Brazilian club E.C. SÃrio, in Puerto Rico, and in Cuba. With E.C. Manuel Raga
Manuel "Manolo" Raga Navarro (born March 14, 1944) is a Mexican former professional basketball player. During his playing career, he was nicknamed, "The Flying Mexican", due to his nationality and his one of a kind 43 inch standing (no step) vertical leap. In 2008, he was named one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors. In 2016, he became a FIBA Hall of Fame player. Club career Raga played professionally for Varese in the Italian League, from 1968 to 1974, and with them, he won three EuroLeague championships. In 1970, he became the first player from an international league to be selected in the NBA Draft, when Atlanta Hawks general manager, Marty Blake, took him with the 167th overall pick. Ubiratan "Bira" Pereira Maciel, commonly known as Bira Maciel, or simply Bira (January 18, 1944 – July 17, 2002), was a professional basketball player from Brazil. He was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Bohdan StanisÅ‚aw Likszo (alternate spelling: Bogdan) (1 January 1940 in Vilnius (Wilno), Soviet occupated Poland – 11 December 1993 in Kraków) was a Polish professional basketball player. Modestas Paulauskas (19 March 1945) is a former Soviet and Lithuanian professional basketball coach and basketball player. As a player, he was the youngest EuroBasket MVP in history, being only 20 years old at the time he won the award. He is known for having been one of the best Lithuanian basketball players of all time, and for having excellent dribbling ability. He was selected as the Lithuanian Sportsman of the Year, a record seven times, in 1965–1967, and 1969–1972. He was a member of the Soviet team that achieved Olympic Gold in 1972 in Munich. Radivoj Korać ( sr-cyrl, Радивој Кораћ; 5 November 1938 – 2 June 1969) was a Serbian and Yugoslav professional basketball player. He represented the Yugoslavia national basketball team internationally. Korać is well-known for holding the EuroLeague's all-time single-game scoring record (since 1958), at 99 points scored, in a game versus Alviks, during the 1964–65 season, and for once making 100 out of 100 free throws on a live television show in Belgium. Korać died in a car crash in 1969, at the age of 30, and FIBA Europe later established the European-wide third-tier level FIBA Radivoj Korać Cup, in his remembrance, in 1971.
