1965–66 MJHL Season
Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) commissioner Jimmy Dunn (sports executive), Jimmy Dunn implemented an automatic one-game minimum suspension for any player who received a match penalty as of the 1965–66 season. He felt that professional hockey influenced fisticuffs in junior hockey and said that, "Any time there's a big fight in the National Hockey League, the kids drop their sticks and put up their dukes in the next game. It happens almost every time". Champion On March 18, 1966, at the Winnipeg Arena, the Winnipeg Rangers won the Turnbull Memorial Trophy as MJHL champs. Manitoba Junior Hockey League
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) is a Junior 'A' ice hockey league operating in the Canadian province of Manitoba and one of nine member leagues of the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). The MJHL consists of thirteen teams all based within the province of Manitoba, eight of which qualify for each year's playoffs. The playoff champion is awarded the Turnbull Cup, the Junior 'A' championship trophy for the province of Manitoba. The winner of the MJHL playoffs (Turnbull Cup) competes against the champion from Saskatchewan for the ANAVET Cup and a berth in the Centennial Cup (formerly known as the Royal Bank Cup). ''The Brandon Sun'' is a Monday through Saturday newspaper printed in Brandon, Manitoba. It is the primary newspaper of record for western Manitoba and includes substantial political, crime, business and sports news. ''The Brandon Sun'' also publishes a weekly Westman This Week edition featuring local columns and events listings that is distributed free to the entire city. It was founded by Will White, with the first edition being printed on January 19, 1882. After some time under a board of directors, J.B. Whitehead purchased the majority of shares in 1903, and took full control in 1911. He ran the paper until 1937 when his son Ernest C. Whitehead took it over. The Whitehead family controlled ''The Brandon Sun'' until 1987, when it was sold to Thomson Newspapers, who owned it until 2001. The ''Winnipeg Free Press'' (or WFP; founded as the ''Manitoba Free Press'') is a daily (excluding Sunday) broadsheet newspaper in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It provides coverage of local, provincial, national, and international news, as well as current events in sports, business, and entertainment and various consumer-oriented features, such as homes and automobiles appear on a weekly basis. The WFP was founded in 1872, only two years after Manitoba had joined Confederation (1870), and predated Winnipeg's own incorporation (1873). Jack Bownass
John Jack Bownass (July 27, 1930 – February 10, 2010) was a professional ice hockey player who played 80 games in the National Hockey League. He played with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers. He was born and died in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association established a second Canada men's national ice hockey team in 1967, to increase the available pool of players at the 1968 Winter Olympics, and Father David Bauer recruited Bownass to coach the second team which was based in Ottawa.
