1965–66 Detroit Red Wings Season
The 1965–66 Detroit Red Wings season saw the Red Wings finish in fourth place in the National Hockey League (NHL) with a record of 31 wins, 27 losses, and 12 ties for 74 points. They defeated the Chicago Black Hawks in six games in the semi-finals before falling to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Final, also in six games. The Red Wings would not appear in the Final again until the 1995 Final. Sid Abel
Sidney Gerald Abel (February 22, 1918February 8, 2000) was a Canadian Hall of Fame hockey player, coach and general manager in the National Hockey League, most notably for the Detroit Red Wings, and was a member of three Stanley Cup-winning teams in 1943, 1950, and 1952. In 2017 Abel was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history. Playing career Born in Melville, Saskatchewan, "Old Bootnose", as he was known, Abel joined the Red Wings in 1938 after playing junior hockey with the Flin Flon Bombers. He split the next two seasons between Detroit and their affiliates in the International-American Hockey League before becoming a full-time player in 1940. Abel was named captain of the Red Wings in 1942. In 1943, Abel left the Red Wings to serve with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Bob Birdsell
Bob Birdsell (born December 10, 1947) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round (eighth overall) of the 1965 NHL Amateur Draft. Birdsell played with the Canadian National Team before beginning his professional career in 1969 with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the Western Hockey League. George Forgie
George Forgie (born February 24, 1948) is a former professional Canadians, Canadian ice hockey player. He was drafted first (third overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1965 NHL Amateur Draft. Playing career Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Forgie played Defenceman, Defence for the Flin Flon Bombers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in the 1964–65 season before being drafted by the Red Wings in 1965. The Wings felt he needed more time to develop and so he would continue to play in numerous minor leagues and would unfortunately never make it into the National Hockey League, NHL. After playing another season for the Bombers after the draft, Forgie moved to the Western Hockey League, WCHL to play a season for Winnipeg and then moved into the Eastern Hockey League, EHL where he would continue his journeyman (sports), journeyman status. 1965 NHL Amateur Draft
The 1965 NHL Amateur Draft was the third NHL Entry Draft. It was a draft to assign unaffiliated amateur junior-age players to NHL teams. It was held on April 27, 1965, at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, Quebec. For the first time the eligibility rules were changed for the 1965 draft. The minimum age criterion was increased, to 18 from 16 years. Clubs were not permitted to begin negotiations with the selected players until they reached 19 years of age, and the date from which they were ineligible due to being on club sponsorship lists was pushed back from May 23 to April 1. The NHL also reached an agreement with the AHL, CHL and WHL, allowing their clubs to participate in the draft. After the NHL clubs made their selections the clubs from the other three leagues were permitted to make their own selections.
