New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Oxley is an New South Wales Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. History Oxley was created in 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation, replacing Electoral district of Gloucester, Gloucester and Electoral district of Raleigh, Raleigh, and elected three members. It was named after John Oxley. In 1927 it was divided into the single-member electorates of Oxley, Gloucester and Raleigh. In 1988 it was abolished and replaced by Electoral district of Port Macquarie, Port Macquarie. It was recreated in 1991. Les Jordan
Leslie Charles Jordan (26 July 1896 – 29 September 1965) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1944 until his death in 1965 . He was initially elected as a member of the Country Party but changed allegiance to the Liberal Party in 1959. Jordan was born in Sydney and was the son of a brick-maker. He was educated at state schools and initially worked as a dairy farm assistant before becoming a real estate agent. When he was in his 30s, Jordan studied law at the University of Sydney and was called to the NSW bar in 1936. Jordan was an alderman on Ryde Municipal Council between 1935 and 1937 and a councillor on Manning Shire Council between 1951 and 1956. He was shire president during those years. Despite his urban background, he made unsuccessful attempts to win the seat of Raleigh at the 1938 and 1941 state elections. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Role The Speaker presides over the House's debates, determining which members may speak. David Bruce Cowan AM (15 January 1926 – 7 April 2011) was an Australian politician and Minister of the Crown in the cabinets of Tom Lewis and Sir Eric Willis. Alfred Dennis
Alfred Hugh Dennis (31 July 1924 – 15 December 2019) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1959 to 1962, representing the electorate of Blacktown. He was elected in 1959 as a Liberal for the typically safe Labor seat, but resigned to sit as an independent in 1962. Dennis was born in Bondi, and was educated at Blacktown Public School. He served with the Second Australian Imperial Force in the South Pacific during World War II, and trained at Yanco Experimental Farm after repatriation. He operated a dairy farm near Richmond, while also working as a farming contractor. He was chairman of the Windsor District Milk Zone Dairymen's Council, and a member of the New South Wales executive of the Primary Producers' Union. He was an alderman of the Windsor Council from 1956 until his election to parliament in 1959.
