1964 Thomas Cup
The 1964 Thomas Cup competition is an international team tournament for supremacy in men's badminton (its female counterpart is the Uber Cup). Beginning in 1948–49 it was held every three years until 1982 and thereafter it has been held every two years. Twenty-six national teams, each (except the defending champion nation) starting from one of four qualifying zones (Asia, Australasia, Europe, and Pan America), vied for the Thomas Cup during the 1963-1964 badminton season. Qualifying zone winners played-off in Tokyo, Japan for the right to face defending champion Indonesia, which was exempt from earlier ''ties'' (team matches), in a conclusive challenge round tie. Prior to 1964 the defending champion nation had regularly hosted both the inter-zone playoffs and the challenge round, but a rules change effective that year prevented the same defending champion nation from having this advantage for two successive Thomas Cup seasons. Channarong Ratanaseangsuang (born 1939), also known as Ratana, is a former badminton player and coach who represented both Thailand and Canada in international competition. Career With a game marked by impressive mobility and consistency, during the 1960s he rated among the world's elite singles players. He reached the final of the prestigious All-England Championship in 1963, the semifinals in both 1964 and 1965, and won the open championships of Canada (1964, 1965) and the United States (1964, 1968). Knud Aage Nielsen
Knud Aage Nielsen (born 1937) is a retired male badminton player from Denmark. Career With a singles game that featured consistency and excellent mobility, Nielsen played at a high international level from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. In 1964 he won men's singles at the All England Open Badminton Championships, then considered the unofficial World Badminton Championships, narrowly defeating fellow Dane Henning Borch in the final. Erland Kops
Erland Kops (14 January 1937 – 18 February 2017) was a badminton player from Denmark who won numerous major international singles and doubles titles from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Early life Kops was born in 1937. His uncles were the boxers Ebbe and Poul Kops who both competed at the Summer Olympics. Erland Kops began to play badminton in Københavns Badminton Klub in 1948. He worked for East Asiatic Company in Thailand from 1958 to 1960. Career In 1958, Erland Kops brought an end to eight years of dominance of by Malayan players at the All England Badminton Championships by winning its Men's Singles event. All England Open Badminton Championships
The All England Open Badminton Championships is the world's oldest badminton tournament, held annually in England. With the introduction of the BWF's latest grading system, it was given Super Series status in 2007, upgraded to Super Series Premier status in 2011. The world's first open tournament was held in the English town of Guildford in 1898, the success of which paved the way for the All England's inaugural edition, which was held at London's Horticultural Halls in 1899. Although the inaugural edition consisted of just the doubles format, the singles were introduced from the second edition onward. It was eventually considered – especially after the first Thomas Cup series in 1949 – the unofficial world championship of the sport until 1977, when the International Badminton Federation launched its official championships. England National Badminton Team
The England national badminton team represents England in international badminton team competitions and is controlled by ''Badminton England'', the governing body for badminton in England. The English team is ranked 13 on the world ranking and has had many appearances in international team events. England were runners-up at the 1963 and the 1984 Uber Cup. They've also been semifinalists 4 times at the Uber Cup. The men's team had two semifinal finishes at the 1982 and 1984 edition of the Thomas Cup. England only finished in the final four once in the Sudirman Cup which was in 2007. James Richard "Jim" Poole (February 6, 1932–November 7, 2021) was an American badminton player who won national and international championships between 1958 and 1979, and a National Football League official. Career Though he did not focus on the sport until the late 1950s when in his mid twenties, Jim Poole went on to have a remarkably long career in high level badminton. He rated among the world's leading singles players in the early 1960s, during which time he became the first of only four non-Asians to win the Malaya (Malaysia) Open singles title (1961). Poole won the U.S. Open singles title in 1958 and 1961 and reached the final of both the U.S. and Irish Opens in 1968 at age 36. The Mexico national badminton team ( es, Selección de bádminton de México) represents Mexico in international badminton team competitions and is controlled by the Mexican Badminton Federation.
