The 1964 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 19th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. New Zealander Barry Briggs secured his third world title with a five race 15 point maximum. Igor Plekhanov the Soviet Union captain won the silver medal after winning the ride off against four times champion Ove Fundin. Individual Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Before the World Championship received its formal recognition from the ACU and the FIM in 1936, other unofficial Speedway World Championships were staged between 1931 and 1935, in Europe, South America and Australasia. Antoni Woryna (born 15 February 1941 in Rybnik, Poland - died 14 December 2002) was an international motorcycle speedway rider who appeared in the Speedway World Championship finals five times, and was the first Polish rider to win a medal at that level when he won the bronze medal in 1966. Marian Rose
Marian Rose (1933-1970) was an international speedway rider from Poland. Speedway career Rose won a gold medal in the Speedway World Team Cup in the 1966 Speedway World Team Cup. He was killed in a race at the Stal Rzeszów Speedway Circuit on 19 April 1970, following a combination of hitting his head when falling off his bike and another rider crashing into him at the same time. The MotoArena Toruń in Poland is named after him. Zbigniew Podlecki (19 January 1940 – 8 January 2009) was a Polish motorcycle speedway rider who won Team World Champion title in 1965. He was born in Vilnius, Lithuania.
