1962 Naples Grand Prix
The 20th Naples Grand Prix was a motor race, run for cars complying with the Formula One rules, held on 20 May 1962 at Posillipo Circuit, Naples. The race was run over 60 laps of the circuit, and was won by Belgian driver Willy Mairesse in a Ferrari 156. This race was held on the same day as the 1962 Dutch Grand Prix, and consequently many of the top drivers at that time were not present in Naples. Only the 10 fastest cars in qualifying were allowed to start the race, leaving a number of the more unusual entrants on the sidelines. The two Ferraris were dominant throughout the weekend, with Lorenzo Bandini leading from the start of the race until lap 24, when he was passed by Mairesse, who led until the end. Naples Grand Prix
The Grand Prix of Naples was an auto racing event, held in Posillipo, outside Napoli. In its original incarnation, it began in 1934. Known as the ''Coppa Principessa di Piemonte'' in honor of Marie-José of Belgium, it continued from the same event held in 1933 in the Circuito Province Meridionale. It was held again from 1937 to 1939, although from 1938 it was purely a Voiturette race and attracted all- Maserati entries. After World War II it was restarted as the ''Gran Premio di Napoli'', starting in 1948. The race took place at the ''Circuito di Posillipo'', going along the Via A. Manzoni and Via Nuova Parco. Starting in Formula Two regulations, but from 1954 it became either a sports car race or a non-Championship Formula One race. It was last held in 1962. In 1998, the Naples circuit received the Rievocazione Storica Gran Premio di Napoli (Grand Prix of Naples Historic Revival). The name ''Gran Premio di Napoli'' now refers to a cycling event. Ian Burgess
Ian John Burgess (6 July 1930 – 19 May 2012) was a British racing driver, born in London. He participated in 20 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 19 July 1958, and numerous non-Championship Formula One races. He scored no championship points. Racing career Burgess began racing in 1950 with a Cooper Formula Three car and had a successful 1951 season including a win at the Nürburgring before moving up to sports cars and Formula Two, where he was less successful. Burgess began working for Cooper, both in their factory and at their drivers' school based at Brands Hatch and raced one of the works Formula Two cars in 1957, when he achieved fourth place in the Oulton Park Gold Cup. This led to a drive with Tommy Atkins' team in 1958, with a similar machine. He won at Crystal Palace and Snetterton and gained fourth places at Reims and Montlhéry. Heinz Schiller
Heinz Schiller (Frauenfeld, Switzerland, January 25, 1930 – Montana, Switzerland, March 26, 2007), was a racing driver from Switzerland. He participated in one Formula One World Championship Grand Prix, on August 5, 1962. He retired from the race, scoring no championship points. Schiller was a speedboat champion in his native Switzerland before turning to sports car racing, finding success during the mid-1950s. He then switched to single seater cars, starting in hillclimbing before moving up to circuit racing. He first appeared in Formula One at the beginning of 1962 with Ecurie Nationale Suisse, driving their three-year-old Porsche in the Brussels Grand Prix, where he finished 8th on aggregate after the three heats. De Tomaso
De Tomaso Automobili ltd. (previously known as De Tomaso Modena SpA) is an Italian car-manufacturing company. It was founded by the Argentine-born Alejandro de Tomaso (1928–2003) in Modena in 1959. It originally produced various prototypes and racing cars, including a Formula One car for Frank Williams's team in 1970. Most of the funding for the automaker came from de Tomaso's brother-in-law, Amory Haskell Jr, Rowan Industries. In 1971, Ford acquired an 84% stake in De Tomaso from Rowan with Alejandro de Tomaso himself holding the balance. Ford would sell back their stake in the automaker in 1974 to Alejandro. Throughout its history, the Italian auto manufacturer Maserati has participated in various forms of motorsports including Formula One, sportscar racing and touring car racing, both as a works team and through private entrants. Beginnings One of the first Maseratis the Tipo 26 driven by Alfieri Maserati with Guerino Bertocchi acting as riding mechanic won the Targa Florio 1,500 cc class in 1926, finishing in ninth place in overall. Maserati was very successful in pre-war Grand Prix racing using a variety of cars with 4, 6, 8 and 16 cylinders (two straight-eights mounted parallel to one another). David Piper (born 2 December 1930) is a British former Formula One and sports car racing driver from England. He participated in 3 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 18 July 1959. He scored no championship points. Racing career Early career and Formula One Piper was born in Edgware, Middlesex and began his career in the mid-1950s by competing in sprints and hill-climbs, before beginning circuit racing with a Lotus Eleven. He then moved up to a Lotus 16 which he used in 1959 and 1960 to compete in both Formula One and Formula Two, by means of changing engines as appropriate. Anthony Frank Settember (July 10, 1926 – May 4, 2014) was a racing driver and engineer from the United States. He was born in Manila, Philippines. He participated in seven Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on July 21, 1962. He scored no championship points. Settember was the nominal head of the Scirocco racing team, and a very efficient driver in sportscars. In addition, he competed in the Trans-Am Series and attempted to qualify for the 1983 Winston Western 500 in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
