1961 Little All-America College Football Team
The 1961 Little All-America college football team is composed of college football players from small colleges and universities who were selected by the Associated Press (AP) as the best players at each position. For 1961, the AP selected three teams of 11 players each, with no separate defensive platoons. Running back Leroy Jackson of Western Illinois finished third in the NCAA in the 100-yard dash and was selected by the Cleveland Browns in the first round (11th overall pick) of the 1962 NFL Draft. Little All-America College Football Team
The Little All-America team is an honor given annually to the best small college players at their respective positions. The first Little All-America team for college football, selected with assistance from reporters in every region, was announced in December 1934 by Edward J. Neil of the Associated Press (AP). Neil wrote that the Little All-America team was intended to honor "the little fellows, players in hundreds of colleges who labored just as earnestly, often with just as much ability, but barely edging into the spotlight . . ." Sid Blanks
Sidney Blanks (April 29, 1941 – December 12, 2021) was an American football player and the first-ever African American football player to play in the Lone Star Conference. College career A halfback, Blanks played college football at Texas A&I University. Blanks was an All-American member of the Texas A&I Javelinas from 1960 to 1963. He was inducted into the Texas A&I Hall of Fame in 1981. In 2002 he was inducted into the Lone Star Conference Hall of Fame. Recruited by College Football Hall of Fame coach Gil Steinke in 1960, Blanks was the first African American to play in the Lone Star Conference. Carey Ernest Henley (September 24, 1936 – April 15, 2013) was an American football player and coach. Henley was born on September 24, 1936, in West Point, Mississippi, where he graduated from West Point High School in 1955. He served two years in the United States Marine Corps, where he played football for Camp LeJeune. Herschel Ray Jacobs (born November 21, 1938) is a former professional American football defensive tackle in the American Football League for the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins and Boston Patriots. He played college football at Howard Payne University. Early years Jacobs attended Corsicana High School, before moving on to Navarro Junior College. After his freshman season he transferred to Howard Payne University, where he played offensive tackle and defensive tackle. Joseph Iacone (born 1940) is a former American football running back. He played college football at West Chester State University from 1960 to 1962 where he was twice named a Little All-America and All-East fullback. He was the leading rusher in NCAA Division II as a sophomore and set career and single-season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rushing and scoring records that remained unbroken for two to three decades. He averaged 139.5 yards per game over his three years at West Chester, which ranked second all-time in NCAA Division II history at the time. Early years Iacone was born in 1940.
