1959 Houston Cougars Football Team
The 1959 Houston Cougars football team was an American football team that represented the University of Houston in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) during the 1959 NCAA University Division football season. In its third season under head coach Hal Lahar, the team compiled a 3–7 record (3–1 against conference opponents) and tied with North Texas State for the MVC championship. Claude King and Howard Evans were the team captains. The team played its home games at Rice Stadium in Houston. Hal Lahar
Harold Wade Lahar (July 14, 1919 – October 20, 2003) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Colgate University (1952–1956, 1962–1967) and the University of Houston (1957–1961). Lahar was born in Durant, Oklahoma and attended Central High School in Oklahoma City. He later was an All-Big Six Conference guard for the Oklahoma Sooners under coach Tom Stidham. Lahar was selected 79th overall in the 1941 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, where he spent the 1941 NFL season before serving in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. After leaving the service as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in 1945, Lahar played for the Buffalo Bills of the All-America Football Conference from 1946 to 1948 before beginning his college coaching career as an assistant under Otis Douglas at the University of Arkansas in 1950. 1959 Washington State Cougars Football Team
The 1959 Washington State Cougars football team was an American football team that represented Washington State University as an independent during the 1959 NCAA University Division football season. In their fourth season under head coach Jim Sutherland, the Cougars compiled a 6–4 record and outscored their opponents 177 to 121. The team's statistical leaders included Mel Melin with 526 passing yards, Keith Lincoln with 670 rushing yards, and Gail Cogdill with 531 receiving yards. The Cougars had only three home games this season: the season opener in Spokane (at night) and two on campus in Pullman. This was the first season after the disbandment of the Pacific Coast Conference, and the first as "Washington State University." Cessna Stadium is a 24,000-seat stadium on the campus of Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, United States. It opened in 1946 and served as the home of the Wichita State Shockers track and field team until 2020 and the football team until the program was discontinued in 1986. The Kansas Board of Regents approved demolition of the stadium in April 2020. Houston–Tulsa Football Rivalry
The Houston–Tulsa football rivalry is a college football rivalry game between Houston and Tulsa. Series history Since 2014, both schools have been members of the American Athletic Conference. They previously competed together in Conference USA from 2005–12 and the Missouri Valley Conference from 1951–59, as well as playing regularly while Houston was independent (1960–75). The rivalry was particularly heated during the Conference USA period, when the two teams dominated the C-USA West Division.
